View Full Version : Vtec Head
I was wondering if it is possible to change a stock sohc non-Vtec into a Vtec. I really want to do this as a lower cost alternative to an H22. Does anyone know if this will work.

It IS a lower cost alternative, but you will still need matching intake and exhaust manifolds, new ECU, ETC. Without major upgrade work done to the head, this combination may only net you 20HP. Not exactly the gains you would hope for, I know.

It's a complete waste of time and money and is in no where near an alternative to an H22A. The Accord SOHC Vtec (F22B1) is an E-Vtec car. Meaning it's Vtec is engineered for economey not performance.
You would benefit allot more from bolt-on's then from tring to do that headswap plus it would probably be a headache. I have a friend that I help do an F22B2 to F22B1 head swap and it turned out alright (no noticable performance increase). I don't know how much different or harder it would be to do using the F22Ax block.

They use the same head hasket, so it would be about the same.
Thats what I was beggining to lean towards, just building up my current engine. It could turn out to be a fun project. Do you guys have any websites that have aftermarket parts for the f22.

What do you mean a "Waste of time?" Depending on what he plans on doing wih his Accord the headswap may be a nice thing to have. I am doing the headswap on my f22a4 because there are a lot more turbo kits for the f22b V-TEC then there is f22a4 non V-TEC. Even if it only gets him 20 hp, thats still 20 hp he didnt have, and that 20 hp is going to cost a lot cheaper then buying enough bolt-ons to give him 20 extra hp.

The extra 20hp are from the improved intake manifold, TB, and exhaust system, not from the head. And there are just as many kits for the F22Ax as there are for the F22B1. You can use a Drag H23A kit and it will fit perfectly in a 4th gen Accord. If you use an F22B1 kit (5th gen) there will be allot of parts that won't fit like the IC piping, downpipe, etc.
It is a complete waste of time weather you want to acknowledge it or not. Doing a frankenstien invites headaches into your life. You can find F22B1 engine for about $300-$400 now a days. He would be better off buying the complete engine if he was hell bent on using the Accord SOHC Vtec.

So an H23 turbo manifold would fit an F22Ax head?
