View Full Version : Upgrading a supercharger...

I'm pretty set on building a turbo system, however, I thought I should learn more about superchargers before I make that decision for sure.

I know superchargers are parasitic, unlike turbos... They require power to make power. That's the main reason why I don't want one. A JR setup is also pretty expensive, though not much more than a decent turbo setup. Finally, I've always been under the impression that you can upgrade and modify turbo systems much more easily than superchargers.

Is it possible to up the boost on a supercharger (easily)? Or change things like belts or pulleys to add more power?

I know the basics of how a supercharger works, but there seems to be very little information that I can easily find regarding the modification of something like the Jackson Racing system.

It's fairly easy to change the boost by messing around with pulleys and all but there is nowhere near the tunability of a turbo system. Like you were saying they take power to make power which makes them way less efficient than a turbo. Most superchargers are around 50% efficient while turbos can be around 90% efficient.

Cool... It's such a shame that both turbos and superchargers are so damn expensive! I guess the good thing is that if I build my engine for one, I could use the other just as easily...

My next question, which I'll just continue right on here rather than starting a new thread, is:

Would it be possible to use BOTH a supercharger AND a turbocharger on my H22A engine? I know the 89-93 Nissan March Super Turbo had this kind of setup, so it has been done (from the factory, even...) That little car was capable of up to 200hp with a tiny .9L engine (110 in stock form). I can only imagine what I could do with my 2.2 (or 2.45, if I bore it out!) I would love to have the immediate response of a supercharger, and the upgradability of a turbocharger all in one.

I may still make a seperate post about this, since I think it's a very interesting subject (that many people might want to read...)

this is called Twincharging.
although it may be possible to do this to an h22, from what i've heard/read, it's nearly impossible to tune properly, and the torque curve is very uneven.

this would be an amazing project, and it would definately be unique, but i think it would be too difficult and costly.

but if you got a ton of money, and you know your forced induction upside down and backwords, then you could build possibly one of the fastest and most badass CB7's.

Cool. I don't know that much, but I learn quickly. I knew next to nothing about engines 9 months ago, and I can hold a fairly decent conversation about em now. Honda engines, anyway!

I've been studying turbocharging recently, and I've just decided to look into supercharging, just so I can really make an educated decision. Who knows, maybe I can make the setup work! It'll be a while before I can afford to do either right, so I have plenty of time to learn!

Thanks though. It's good to know that someone else knows what I'm talking about!
