View Full Version : Dash/Console Swap?

I'm planning an in-dash touchscreen LCD carPC and my 1992 accord dash says "no". there are a few options i had thought of.

1. put it in the double-din, but that's far too low, and at the wrong angle to see the LCD. i guess i could tilt it, but it's still too low.

2. relocate the climate controls and head unit, and cut the cross-bar that separates the climate control from the HU and fiberglass...blah..blah..work..blah.

3. relocate the air vents, climate controls, 4way & rear defrost, & HU, and rebuild the whole console.

i don't like any of these options, so...

do you think it would be possible to swap the whole dash for one from a 94-97 accord? now i know this sounds stupid. but i think it could work even if i only use the center console section, and just fiberglass it into the stock 92 dash. but i would like to use the whole dash, or as much as possible.

this is what makes me think it will work. so many parts of the 4th and 5th gen are very, very similar, if not the same. the location of the dash components is roughly the same. i know the center console won't work as-is because of the e-brake and possibly the shifter position.

what do you think?

I think it could be done but you will have a lot of like work to make it fit in there perfect or maybe it will fit.. It looks a little wider on the 94-97 :-/ hmmm:p

i realize that if i actually get the dash swap to work, i'll have to get the 5th gen door panels as well, but it looks like they should swap out rather cleanly. slight relocation of the door-handle. probably relocating the retaining pins. minor mod to accomodate the molding at the side-view mirrors. all this is assuming the overall dimensions are the same.

i would also need a 5th gen e-brake lever, and just bolt it in the appropriate location to work with the center console.

this sounds like a lot of work.:(

5th gen center console grafted into 4th gen dash.

actually with how you have it photoshopped, it might not even be that hard. you will need to cut off alot of the plastic of the 5th gen console where it meets the dash, and either mould it on or just cut it even enough that it meets up flush.

im sure you could make your own radio and LCD mounts inside of the new console, in case thigns dont line up... but a concern would be, would the shifter assembly line up as perfectly as you have it photoshopped? most likely not, but hey, they may be similar enough that honda has the shifter in the same location.

are you going to get a 5th gen console and try this out? it would look very cool if it worked. good luck!

at very least i will try the center console graft that i photoshopped. it has to be the cheapest, easiest, and most forgiving option. it would put the touchscreen at a much more accessable angle. but the whole dash swap is still my goal.

not sure if your idea will work or not, but i do think that it is way overthought.

it would seem to involve a bit of time and effort, whether you swapped the location of the heater/ac and headunit... or if you, as you stated it, grafted in the 95 console into your 92. if anything, i think it would take less time and effort to swap locations. i

would also think that it would be cheaper and easier:
notice the lack of heater/ac controls in the photoshopped picture. while it is indeed a good photoshop, where will those controls be?!? i guess they would have to be relocated.

it seems that you are concerned about the height at which the lcd screen sits. it would seem to make the most sense to swap the locations of the heater/ac and headunit.

i think your idea sounds unique, but i don't think that it is the easiest way to get what you seem to desire.

edit: the lcd screen in this 93 accord seems to be at an appropriate height, and it's in the stock location.

that guy's lcd slides in and out, mine will be built in, flush mounted. and his is probably 6 or 7", mine is 8.5".

you can see where the lcd, climate controls and hu will be located if i go this route.

HondaSound on HS put a 7" LCD in his stock radio location (double din) and then moved the radio down to where the cig lighter, ash tray, cup holder is. Custom job but worth it if that's you goal.

i like the fact that there was no cutting or actual modding of the original dash. this may make for a nice temporary solution.

If you're going to do a full interior swap from a 5th gen, you might as well go big and use the cl interior ;)

That'd be cool, but he can't. All of the CL's are Coupes. Could probably do a Vigor, but they are really crowded. Or maybe a 1G TL.
