View Full Version : Swirls-everybody hates them
I have a black cb and have numerous swirls all over the car. It looks horrible when hit by direct sunlight. I have tried waxing it with turtle wax. It helps to a certain point, but still there are swirls. What do you guys suggest I should use to eliminate swirls? Type G, you have to know this...

the hardest part about swirl marks is figuring out what you are doing wrong.
you will have to use abrasives to correct the swirls in your paint.
1.) i suggest claybaring it to remove all the contamints and old wax from the paint.
http://www.mothers.com/products/productcatalog/productpics/07240.jpg
2.) go around the car with scratch remover on the big/bad scratches: don't do the whole car just bad spots.
http://www.mothers.com/products/productcatalog/productpix/08408.jpg
3.) then i would use a random orbital buffer to get the swirls out with this:
http://media.ptg-online.com/media/pc/Products/Tools/ExtraLarge/20021101200000_7424_72dpi_500.jpg http://www.mothers.com/products/productcatalog/productpics/08616.jpg
use a cutting pad, follwed by a polishing pad, with the orbital...i won't say what color because as they vary from different manufactures...so better to call it a cutting pad.
you can do the rest by hand or continue useing the obital
4.) then follow with: pre-wax cleaner
http://www.mothers.com/products/productcatalog/productpics/07100.jpg
5.) then: sealer and glaze
http://www.mothers.com/products/productcatalog/productpics/08100.jpg
6.) then: pure carnuba wax
http://www.mothers.com/products/productcatalog/productpics/05550-05750.jpg
i am not trying to advertise, but that is what i use. i am not familiar with other product lines, but the basic idea is to remove contaminats, polish, seal, wax.
use micro fiber towels and a clean wash mitt to prevent swirls from comming back. after you have done all this, you should have dramatic results. later.

typeg is right.
my personal preference is poorboy's products, as i've much better results with them than mother's.
super swirl remover, polish, sealant, wax.

and using a random orbital buffer makes the job a lot easier.

1. wash the car real good. The jambs, under the hood, and wheel wells too.\
2. strip it down to the paint; pre-wax cleaner to remove old wax, swirls, oxidized paint, contaminants, and it does a deeper removing of dirt than just washing does.
2b. clay bar- this is like magic. This step is especially necessary for dark colored vehicles. When I detailed my black 93' EX I did this and after I was all done something rich in the paint was revealed to me; gold flake.
3. apply a paint sealer to fill in the pores
4. apply a glaze product to fill in the swirls, scratches and other minor imperfections.
*some brands combine step 3 and 4 into one product because they are basically doing the same thing.
5. apply a wax product
a. natural waxes with carnuba make for a more beautiful glowing shine, but it needs to be reapplied every 6 to 8 weeks because it breaks down from exposure to ultraviolet rays. That means out in the sun for those of you fighting off a hang over and are having a hard time just getting through this post.
b. synthetic waxes only need to be applied 2 times a year, but the shine doesn't have the "life" in it like carnuba waxes. It's like comparing real wood floors to composite wood floors. The real ones have that natural warm glow where as the composite floors don't but the finish will hold up to most anything.
6. in between waxes apply detail mist after washing to maintain the smooth finish and to make it to the 6 to 8 week mark otherwise wax monthly.
b. synthetic waxes
The advice you guys gave me was exactly what I was looking for. I couldn't find any before pictures so here is the pic after numerous hours of buffing.(about six hours) I saw dramatic results and plan to keep it that way. :)

what do you guys think?

Bump for a good OLD Thread. I think it is pretty obivious which brand TypeG uses and reccomends... This is some good stuff. I will be using this in the spring or when it warms up a little bit outside. Dont really want to go through all this in the freezing wind we have had around here lately. Later

for me i personally use CAR BRITE products, since i work in a dealer, but let me tell u that sometimes i've had to use poormans products,
and or mix waxes, and to tell u the truth they've come out really good,
i dont think the waxes matter, is how u use the and for what purposes,
now even with black cars using *** ass wax i dont leave swirls, and by hand

where can you buy all these cutting pads and polishes, and do they come in different stages of abrasiveness, or do you just have to do it in stages?
EDIT: I found a good orbital buffer at sears, its a 10 inch craftsman for like 45 dollars. i just need to go get the pads and polishes. I want to get everything the first trip, so help would be appreciated.

I got one of those, wasn't too impressed. Seemed like it just jiggled more than anything. I got a Porter Cable 6" Random Orbit and some Sonus SFX Pads and Polish and used Zaino Z2 Pro Synthetic wax. Works like a charm every time. Make sure always to clay bar before you polish!!!!

if you need to do alot of defect removal you need a cutting pad.(follow with polishing pad)
if you have no swirls, but just need to shine your paint, you could get a polishing pad.
you can use a finshing pad to apply sealers and wax's after the main polish, but i usually do it by hand.

^What do you mean keep the black clean? People recommend Back to Black by mothers. I used it and it worked to restore the blackness, nothing amazing but nice. But by your sig it looks fine...
Anyone have any pictures of swirling? Or tips to avoid this while waxing and what not?

No swirls

There you go. About how to avoid swirling, as TypeG has said most swirling comes from washing and drying. When you are washing and drying you are working to get all of the dirt off of the vehicle. Without the proper tools, you just move the dirt around on the car, which causes swirling. Best way to avoid swirls- 2 bucket method, grit gaurd (2 if you can) good wash mitt (wool, microfiber, seasponge) and a quality car wash shampoo. When drying, always use nice microfiber towells. They help trap the dirt and lift it from the paint without causing swirls. Not to shoo you off, but autogeek online, mother's wax forum, and autopia are all great sites with a wealth of info. Everything you would ever want to know is on those sites. Truth is, you could probably find out about as much by just PM'ing TypeG :p

OH wow. That's so such a big difference. I guess I do get pretty bad swirling on my car. I need to look into that, it's annoying in the rear view mirror for sure. I washed my windows twice with microfiber towels and still have them.... So noob.
