I did this awhile back. I wasn't planning on making it into a how to...but I'm bored so I'll throw it up. As you can tell from the pics this wasn't supposed to be a how-to. You can also do this EXACT same thing for your tired old windshield wipers too...I did this for them as well.

The tool belt:
can of flat black rust oleum paint
sand paper / electric sander
yesterdays newspaper
a few towels
about a day to let dry

Yeah, so you're set to get this painted. You rip the thing from the bolts and lay the paper down so you can prep it. Grab the sander and go all around it. Don't really get like every single thing off but just go over it and whatever falls off should do the trick. After all of that take to towel(s) and wipe off the excess so it doesn't screw up the paint. Next you take the paint and paint over it in light storkes untill it's all covered. Don't over power it or I'll be a tad runny. Mine did that in one area. Next you want to move them somewhere that they can dry. It says that they can be touched after a few hours...but just store them over night. After you put it on don't worry if it smells a tad from the paint. After about 30 minutes it should be gone. Mine has never had any problems with peeling or bubbling. So...yeah, here's some pics of it. Good luck!

Back after we first got it (May 2003)...UGH!!!!:

I did that but the headers were the same color as the cover...:idiots:

precicely

THAT and supposedly it will eventually eat the paint on the bottom of the hood. Aftermarket headers must be coated so they don't do that.

I had my heat shield off for about 7 months a drove it like i normally do, and there was no difference in amount of heat put off or any sign of chipping paint.

i didn't really think that was a diy cause i did it in like 2 mins...of course i didn't take the heat shield off at all even to paint it cause i thought i was gonna be getting an h22 at the time. Should i add this to my mods list or somethin lol?

Want an effective heat solution? Get header wrap.

Sorry for whoring your DIY, btw.

hey man, i like it. looks nice and clean. like the grill black-out DIY of yours also. do you need to use the heat resistant rust-oleum? like the stuff for barbeques?

As I said in the email, the regular paint is fine. If you want to get the high heat stuff go for it...but IMO the other stuff is fine.

I might do this.

it definately looks bold inside the hood. the only thing is that your valve cover and the shield will be black and everything else is like silver...the contrast is amusing. :D

alright i was taking out my heat shield to do this and i ran into a big problem when taking out the 3 bolts.. i got the right side good and when i was on the left bolt it got stuck so i was like oh okay use a lil more force.. well... if you've done something like this b4 to much force kinda juss broke the whole bolt so now im wondering how can i get the old bolt out that is still stuck in the engine??? also its just those 3 bolts to take it of right? hahaha after i saw the post i tried doing it but came upon this and that sucked:( ... please help thanks a lot guys:D

I did just the opposite, mine was half nasty and have silver so I busted out the SOS pad and some simple green and bam, its all silver....here is a pic (not thread jacking) Also when I tried to take off the actual shield it got hung up on the 02 sensor....anyone got any tricks to taking it out (it just unscrews right) and again sorry for the n00b question, I just have never taken it out on my car. I like the idea of painting it or polishing it....and the reason I have not replaced with a header is due to cost and I plan for h22 swap.

And yes I didn't install my intake because I cleaned the filter and was waiting for it to dry....and I love simple green, its owNZ.

The silver is nice but I'm more of a fan of black. :)

But yours does look nice.

Do you REALLY think that thin little alunimum(sp) shield is going to "shield" heat? That damn thing gets so fuggin hot it would ADD heat to the bay.
actually, it is mild steel. later.

i removed my heatshield but my dad said that the engine will overheat if it does not have the heatshield on so i painted it and put it back on i know for a fact that the damn engine wont overheat but he claims it will

physics doesnt like you.

i sanded all the ugly grey paint off of my cover, then painted the "hot" square with the hand on it blue with high temp engine enamel. after it dried i sanded the surface off so the highest points are bare metal, but the "pools" or low spots, are still blue, looks pretty cool, and the "X" in the middle got heat polished blue. looks awesome.

on an accord i don't forsee it being a problem. i JUST did this this weekend on my dsm(didn't see the DIY till now)... all i did was wd40 the shit out of the bolts, take my breaker bar to it and they popped right off. sanded all the old rust off with 80 grit so i had a smooth surface to paint and then used 1200 degree black paint(turbo charged cars get QUITE hot after spirited runs) ;)

you can see how ugly the heatshields were... i painted the valve cover red and polished the letters and then painted the heatshields black. currently everything is on my garage floor waiting reassembly, but i found that the corner of my valve cover had a MEAN ass leak and my tranny and everything on that side was flooded with oil... sorry for the long winded post and sorry if i am hijacking in anyway. its 2 am and i am EXTREMELY fucked up!!!

Just ignore the blue worms, they've been removed... Well most of them except for the destroyed wire looming that was replaced by the blue.. But you can see the nicely painted heatshield :) I personally like the clean look of a painted heat shield than the rusted exhaust manifold.

yeah black heatshield do look pretty bad ass on accords. what the hell are all those blue things anyways? you should touch up that one bolt on the alternator side...

Wow now I know what smurf intestines look like...

I was thinking about putting some silver or aluminum colored engine paint on my heat shield.

Is that shield on the CB7s originally gray or silver in color?

haha yeah I know I was in the rice phase when I first bought the wagon and I had all my wire looming on it when the photo's were taken, they've been drastically dulled down from that picture.

I was this close >< to doing the blue wire looms too... now I'm glad that I didn't, after seeing how loud it looks (although I see you also did blue hoses too).

Maybe I'll paint my heat shield blue since that's the only color engine paint I have... of course, that assumes I could get the O2 sensor out easily so I could remove the shield. Any tips on taking the heat shield off a 91 LX manual?

do you mean broke a bolt?

but there seems to be a plug going thru the shield...im not sure if i should take it out because i can't tell what it is..anybody have an idea?
it sounds like the oxygen sensor. you don't have to unscrew it. just unplug it from the harness and manuver the sheild around it. also there are 3 bolts that hold the heatsheild on. later.
