Yeah, but most folks won't even spring for the nice parts (honestly myself included most of the time) and you seem to be willing to put in the sweat equity to bring the build up to a certain level....

Has anything been done to the car recently? If not, I'd probably say one of your vacuum lines might be leaking. Keep in mind the brake booster and fuel regulator could be sources for leaks too.
