I just ran the blue LED along the side of the switch. There's enough gap to allow light to show through. I use to have this setup prior and learned that you need to put it on the correct side....

Either way it's possible. You undo everything under the dash, and it slides out. Helps to have a manual.

Aluminum doesn't rust.... you would buff to get more ... shine. There's different products for this, some claim to "hold in protection" etc. Maybe I'm reading you wrong though.
