    Need help identifying block

    Good Evening,

I recently purchased a Ody with a supposedly JDM H22A, I found a timing cover in the van that said H22A4. The previous own bought the motor from a guy that told him it was JDM. Sad to say the idiot who owned it previous to the guy I bought it from I can only assume it was him that shaved the numbers off the block and painted it black. So it doesn't say H22AX or whatever on the front and the numbers under the half shaft are gone. I did find these numbers next to where the half shaft plugs into the transmission, I'm not sure if it's just a serial number or what.

    6A2541(3) or (8)

I've been reading around, I guess people shave the stamp when they've stolen motors I guess?? Sounds dumb to me, but I was thinking maybe the guy took a F/H block USDM put a JDM head on it, or vice versa and didn't want to look dumb having a USDM block with a JDM head or what not.

Are there any other ways to tell if the head or block are JDM? If I can find out that'd be awesome so at least I know what I have, it's a shame whoever did this to the block.

Can you see the dates on when the block was made above the manifold pipes?

Or what is stamped on the head. Unless the guy told you they did a head swap. I tried googling to see if I could find any other way of looking for a stamp on the block and nothing came up.

I see P13 stamped on the head. I figured jdm or not it had stamped p13 but I'm not sure.

I will also check above the exhaust manifold for a date.

Well I can tell you it’s not a Euro R as those are stamped PDE. My H22a is stamped p13 hf-1 and my block is stamped no.3 97 and the head is stamped with arrow pointing to 12 and the number 97 on the inside. So it seem’s someone may have done a head or block swap on your motor. (This is me guessing).

I can’t find a straight answer if both JDM and USDM H22 we’re stamped differently or not. May get more answers once you crack open the block.

I was thinking of just tearing it down just because I have no history of the motor and it's pretty sketchy looking.

If you have a few bucks to potentially waste go buy some window etch acid from a hobby store or online. Apply a coat to the area and wait, keep doing this and see if anything shows up. The stamped area is denser due to compression, and will absorb less acid, possibly showing you the code.

Worst case is you are out a few dollars and a little time. Best case you figure out what block you have.

Also, the picture of R H DOT , where on the block is that? Looks like front where the slave cylinder bolts on?

I have a JDM h22a and EDM h23a3 sitting in front of me and neither have that stamp anywhere that I can see, but that R H DOT label is common on USDM Honda parts.

This is a good point. I just looked there on my h and I don’t have the R H DOT stamp either.

It has to be a USDM block then. What about the intake, it has a block off plate on the front, I forget what goes there, but I have a few H intake manifolds, but I don't believe it has a block off plate there.

My intakes does not have that as well. But I believe that is the air booster valve. I can’t remember the exact name.

Ya... makes sense that they would shave it. Trying to sell a USDM block as a "red top". & ya, that thing does look sketchy. I wouldn't be surprised if the inside looked as sketchy....

I knew it wasn't a red top because that paint job on the valve cover is terrible. Then the intake is completely different from a red top, it has to be a h22a4.
