it seems like 50mm pics come about alot better, or maybe its my settings?? hahah

well its not so much that pictures taken with a 50mm lens come out better. 50mm is a prime lense that doesnt zoom at all and the only moving part in it is focusing. Because of few moving parts prime lenses tend to be a lot sharper than zoom lenses. im sure there are zoom lenses just as sharp from canons L line and Nikons ED Pro line but those will cost you in the thousands. also my 50mm is a f/1.8 which allows you to open the aperture very wide and create some cool effects with shallow dof. 50mm are also great for portraits because of that reason.

Try stopping your aperture down a couple of stops. An f/4 zoom will probably be at its sharpest around f/8-f/11. My f/2.8 Sigma doesn't start getting sharp until I get around f/5.6-f/8 or so.
