    Mini Air Breather?

I don't know anybody who has one of these on there car, but I alway see them when I go into shops. Here is a pic.. http://www.circuitcity.com/IMAGE/pro...AEM.153005.JPG

I understand what it's for, but where does it go? I was told it goes some where on the valve cover, yet I couldn't find a place to put it at all. Also, is it worth putting one on?

i used to have one connected to the top left side of the valve cover, where there is a hose running from there to your intake tubing.

wish i had a pic, hard to explain w/o knowing all the precise terms

I had one on and there's supposed to be a vacuum there, but all I got was a fine spray of oil coming out of it. I took mine off after only 3 days and put it back the way it was.

I had a breather on my car for maybe 2 years. It goes on the valve cover where a vacuum lines connects your intake. Never had a problem with mine at all. Its supposed to filter all the excess oil spray off so that you dont accumulate a sludge inside your intake manifold. I changed mine out every oil change and never had a problem with it.

just a valve cover breather...simply prevents oil vapor from the crankcase from being rerouted into the intake stream. Same as a oil catch can except it just releases the vapor into the air. Not a performance mod but it oil vapor does lower the octane rating of gas. But pretty much a dress up thing...but i've got one

exactly you can either plug the vac line opening on the air intake pipe, or place a breather valve on there too. here's the breather filter on my valve cover

well i guess it depends on where you live... but im pretty sure in CA, breathers arent legal. i have a can instead. i assume its ok... i kept it on when i got smogged and they didnt say anything.

                like so...

Right on! Also, the inside of your crank case and valve cover get extreamly hot, and where the factory tube runs from the top of the valve cover straight into the side of your intake, in essance you are routing all the hot air from inside your valve cover back into your intake. That kinda defeats the purpose of having any intake mods, be it a short ram or cold air set up. The "baby" breather in place of the factory tube helps keep all that harmful, unwanted hot air out of your air intake.

I am running 2 of them in my engine bay, and I have no problems with them. You can kinda see them in this pic. 1 on the valve cover, and the other on the intake. (the one on the intake can be considered my Air Bypass just in case i suck up water.

Is that little hole in your intake actually going to do anything as a by-pass?? It looks like the hole is just too small to do anything like an actual bypass... Interesting idea though!

i have the same setup, and have been for years, and the mini-breather filter will NOT do anything functional to be considered a bypass valve.

you could do a DIY oil catch can to a breather if you want to avoid the spraying of oil... the hole on the top of the valve cover gets rid of the excess air that builds up in the top of the valve cover, and adds to the pressure inside of your engine.. the ammount of air getting into your intake is not enough for you to see a performance decrease either.. guess it's a matter of preference, but i'd prefer a diy catch can wired inbetween the valve cover and the intake....

So, to the guys who said they had no problems with their breathers, does that mean no oil spray either like a couple of the other guys said? And, is it necessary to change the filter with every oil change or what?
