    carbon fiber materials

does anybody know where to buy carbon fiber and the resin so i can make my own carbon fiber trunk (since i cant find one) and all the other goodies i can think of? and how much does anybody think it might cost?

you can order carbon fiber sheets from this website:
    http://www.macqc.com/raceplates/

and make your own, if interested.

i'm not sure, but i can guess on your ability to work with carbon fiber, and thus make a trunk for yourself...

absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

Hope all goes well when you attempt it. It's extremely hard. I have a friend who does carbon fiber and he says it's TUFF. Not doubting your ability, but don't rush through the process. Post pics of the process if you attempt it. GL

well, b4 you start makin parts. this is a list of basics you will need to know.

        1. you will need 1 OEM trunk. this will be called your "part"

        2. now you need fiberglass, resin, and other basic "rolling tools"

        3. make sure the trunk lid is in PERFECT shape. any imperfections on the "part", and they will transfer to the "mold". spray a "releasing agent" on the trunk lid. important so when you "pop" your "mold" off your "part", no stress fracturing happens.

        4. i would start with "chop glass" to cover the trunk. once that has "kicked", start "laying up" your "matting". i would go 7 layers. to make sure it is a strong mold.

        5. once the "mold" has kicked. use some air pressure and maybe some plastic wedges to release the mold from the part, which is the trunk. after you have the mold all by its self. then you can start to inspect for imperfection. get all imperfections worked out. mainly wet sanding if they are not to bad.

        6. start laying up all your presious CF into your mold. but you have to have a steady hand, due to the fact that you are looking for perfect weeve pattern.

but b4 you take my lil step by step above. ask your self two things.
        1. if you cannot identify all terminolgy that i have marks around. then dont attempt with out proffesional supervision.
        2. is there a local book store, that will give me "THE GUIDE FOR CF ON THE IDIOT LEVEL" or something like that.

not poking fun. there is manuals out there for basic knowlage of these things.
but BEWARE, this is a very complicated thing to attempt, if you have no fiberglass background.
FYI, i have been building boats for about 6 years now. so i kinda know a bit about this.

just beg a local cf shop around u to make it. bribe them with cookies and beer. and porn...

j/k...but on the real tip though.. check around ur local body shops, and boat building shops, some times they don't have too much work and if u provide the materials they would do it for u...CHEAP too!

couldn't have said that better myself.

i don't build boats, but i WILL attest to the pickiness of the science of fiberglass ESPECIALLY WITH FLAT SURFACES, AND MORE ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU HAVE A SPECIFIC WEAVE PATTERN - out of all the fabrication mediums i have worked with, glass is the MOST particular - temperature to pressure, to technique - there's no slipping anywhere in this science...
