    Shaving molds and emblems

im about to journey into bodywork.

i want to have some knowlegde in this, so if theres anything any of u might want to add feel free to do so.

im gona practice shaving on my junk accord i have before really attempting it on the real deal car.

i kno the best way to shave is with metal
but you can also shave with body filler such as bondo
i was thinking about trying that route sense im not a welder.

heres what i thought of last night:

for the door molds, instead of pulling them off and filling in that section, leave them on, get a electrical cutting, like a elect. hand saw. cut the mold down close enuff to parellel to the car door. and the little gap between the car door and where the mold connects...use bondo to fill, then sand area down.

im also gona try shaving the emblems of the trunk and shaving the top of the inner tail lights to the trunk

might try it this sunday, but if i do, ill get pics of process

Filling the side molding will just lead to cracking. You should learn how to weld, then cut the metal for the size of the side molding, weld it in there with 1/16" of an inch left then just smooth the rest out with duraglass or other body filler. That's your best bet.. filling is just being lazy and asking for problems.

.. i HAD more shaved on my accord than your girl does on her entire body..

what im saying is not pulling the mold off.

im saying cut the mold down and use fill on the side of the molds.

to me, its not being lazy, its a DIY for folks who dont have access or the neccessary tools to do cuting and welding.

like i said, im gona give it a try on my junk car before anything else

because of the constant vibration the door gets, especially from closing it, the bondo will eventually crack.

those wouldn't be a problem for bondo; those are small gaps to fill. good luck on the DIY

                thanks...
like i said im gona try it on the junk car first.
im really not pressing the issue on how to do it, its just some things i would like to kno how to do.

so im a give it a try, then wait for a week, and smash something into it.....like thro a baseball or football into it as hard as i can to see how it reacts....lol

Thats a good idea, but just doing that alone isnt going to hold...but IF you were to trim the molding down more than your thinking about, then got a peice of metal and bolt the metal stripe on top of the existing molding and the other side to the inside of the door itself (the bolts going all the way through the molding and door), so that there is no movement whatsoever from the metal, moldings, and door...its kinda like if you are going to mold your rear fiberglass bumper...

OR you could do it like I did my moldings: Use fiberglass, cut out long stripes and fill in...then use tigerhair(shredded fiberglass with resin premixed) to fill in the rest of the area. Then apply the plastic filler(bondo) over the glassed area and about 6" above and below then moldings, then sand it smooth.

If you dont understand what I said, PM me and I can give you more details of what Im trying to explain.

                  Jay

Edit: My filled moldings have made NO PROBLEMS since I have done them. If done correctly, they WILL last. IMO it takes more time to fill it properly then it does to weld it.
But I was in the same situation when I did mine, I didnt have much experience welding, so I opted to fill it and HAVENT regretted it yet.

akkordlayinkit covered exactly what i did. If your shaving the emblem holes, recess the holes a little bit 1st with a body hammer (dent them in, basically) then put strips of fiberglass/fiberglass resin over that. That way, once you bondo over that, it will be flush with the trunk lid.

hey whats up guys, as far as taking off the emblums in the back i did that last summer, here is a pic...

I was thinking about doing the molding running down the sides, but then figured what if someone smoked my side with a door in a parking lot or something? Then im fucked...so i decided to keep them bc i have kinda a unique paint job...

For the rear emblem, you just remove the "H" and bondo and sand over the hole. Then use touch-up paint from the Honda dealer to match it with your car. How do i shave the front emblem? Do i have to buy a new grill?
