reverse light problem

hey guys, problem started when i took my car out of storage, nothing was done/changed/repaired/played with to cause the problem, it just happened out of nowhere.....

my reverse lights stay on all the time now, and i just changed the reverse switch on the tranny just now and it didnt fix it....
anyone can help me trouble shoot the problem or point me something else i should check??? cause im getting really tired of this, i hate anything related to electricity im just not good at that and im loosing patience now

The electrical system in a CB7 is very oldfashioned.

Maybe it's as "simple" as 2 wires that are shortcutting somewhere in the trunk or where the wires move (Like the doors)?

All the time? Even with the key out of the ignition?

Could be rust in a connection ? Or water ingress?

no there is no rust, how do i find a short? i really suck with electricity....
and no not all the time, they are on only when car is running or ignition is on, they turn off when i turn the car off

Try and check the wires at the hinges of the trunk, preferably where the wires move as you open and close the trunk.

That is my best guess but i don't imagine that is the problem.

Also check the fuse box, remove the reverse light fuse and check that the connections are clean.


I dunno really, just guessing.

When I bought my car it had a bad reverse light sensor/switch.

I installed a new switch on the tranny and was still having the issue... eventually found that the switch worked as it was supposed to when only halfway threaded in, so I added a washer as a spacer between switch and tranny and now it works great.

What I did was back my car up against a wall so I could see the light from the reverse lights while under the hood (with the tranny in a gear that isn't reverse).
Then I loosened the switch until the lights came off... then went inside and threw it into reverse to verify the lights went back on.
If your replacement switch is like mine, you will need to do this and add a washer so you can get it tight at that spacing.

the funk my switch is from the dealer, maybe yours was a jobber? but i'll give it a try

I drew the circuit for you. You don't have to read the entire thing. Just know that the switch is the only thing in the path. TheFunk posted very good advice also.

i will gladly participate but i dont have much time for myself lately, even less for the car...im starting a new job that requires homework, plus i just moved 2 days ago, i don't even have tv or internet plugged yet and im surrounded by boxes lol
tools are all out and ready to use tho so ill get on it soon!
