    nakamichi head units/stock looking aftermarket

Hello, I'm searching for a nakamichi head unit or something else that is not too flashy. Car is a 90 accord dx sedan. Only has front speakers, stock honda 1000 head unit. Looking for good sound quality comparable to my 2012 civic si. I'll just start with front speakers and head unit and eventually add a small sub and rear speakers. Not trying to "bump" but I do enjoy listening to music.

I'll post some links of the hu's on ebay....

Blaupunkt cm84 http://www.ebay.com/itm/BLAUPUNKT-LE...gAAOSwPCVX5Y0z this is a cassette player but has cd changer controls so I assume I'd have to add a cd changer.

    Nakamichi cd45z with mf-41 cd changer(japanese version) http://www.ebay.com/itm/High-End-Nak...cAAOSwnHZYTkd~

    Nakamichi md45z modified for 87.5 to 108 mhz http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-NAKAMIC...3D282237807683

    Nakamichi mb 75 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nakamichi-MB...4AAOSw2xRYPwL6

    Nakamichi cd30z http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-NAKAMIC...3D322348209766

Nakamichi mb-650 (ad says cd not working so I assume the cd changer is broken.)http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-NAKAMIC...3D282237807683

Denon dct-r1 (beginning to really dig this one.)http://www.ebay.com/itm/DENON-DCT-R1...QAAOSwcUBYMby2

Nakamichi mbvi (new!!! But 500$...) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nakamichi-Ja...NIxhz29kxkCHmA

Blaupunkt Indianapolis cd34 (new, and priced right.) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Blaupunkt-In...QAAOSwEzxYYVmU

    Blaupunkt alaska rdm168 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Blaupunkt-In...QAAOSwEzxYYVmU

    Clarion cz702 (looks ok) http://www.bestbuy.com/site/clarion-...FQUoaQodH7QC5w

Update. I installed nakamichi mb-x with a scosche dash kit. Waiting on a connector for the amp block to wire it up. I'm happy with the way it looks

How often do you listen to CDs? Deev made a thread a while back for a media player head unit for his Miata that didn't have CD functionality. Honestly, if you listen the radio or just use your phone, that's the way to go. Less moving parts and they make them fairly shallow. That's likely what I'll end up doing. I only ever listen to sports radio or my audio books.
My Members' Ride Thread - It's a marathon build, not a sprint. But keep me honest on the update frequency!

Was it about a boss head unit?
I usually connected to bluetooth and listened to whatever in my other cars. I'm going to probably use an aux cable or do CDs if I get a nakamichi.

10-4. If you actually use CDs, then a digital media receiver likely isn't for you. Most people these days don't, so the ability to add bluetooth hands-free calling, an auxiliary input (or bluetooth playback) and possibly a double-DIN screen for a back-up camera are enough. Even that last one is more of a luxury than anything else.

That's cool that one of those guys was able to modify the radio frequencies on that Japanese head unit. It used to be the cool thing to do to buy Addzest and Carrozzeria head units from Japan and install them in your Honda. I bought one that had a mini disc player, for whatever reason. It was stolen a few months later, and I didn't try to replace it. A few months of listening to nothing but CDs, which is not usually my MO. It was a poseur thing to do, I admit.

Yeah, I used to have a pretty decent cd collection. I remember during high school it was pantera vulgar display of power for weeks at a time and then a little while after it was a few albums by in flames. I was born in 92 so I didnt get an ipod until I was probably 16 and it was off brand. I'm bidding on a mb-vi so I'll update if I win, post pictures and all that jazz.

That's funny, because that was my idea a few years ago when I bought a cheap little JVC head unit with no CD Player for my Toyota Corolla daily. I use my phone for music so a head unit with just the AUX cord jack or even better, a bluetooth connect is perfect these days!
            Keep Pushing..

I agree but I have yet to find an aftermarket head unit that looks factory with all the fancy stuff. The only thing is a blaupunkt birmingham 2012 and it's 220$ http://www.blaupunktdirect.co.uk/car...gham-2012.html

For 220$ or less I can haz me one of deez

And it has an aux port so I can still connect my phone.

Edit: wow, I haven't looked at cds in a while and they can be had dirt cheap

                Media receiver

I have installed in two of my cars Media receivers, which are car stereos that do not have cd play capability but offer aux input, usb input and bluetooth. I was on the same boat you are with the whole non flashy idea but in all honesty you are not going to get anywhere near the same sound as your Si even with a kickass stereo since the speakers in the car are not up to the task. I have a pioneer MVH-X380BT in my GMC and love the bluetooth features and sound quality from said connection. My Corolla has a Sony DSX-A40UI which does not have bluetooth like the Pioneer, sound quality thru aux is not bad but could not tell you about USB since the radio does not sync with my phone for some reason. If i were to buy another Car Stereo i would get either Pioneer or Alpine, I looked at Nakamichi but it is not the same company that had the stellar reputation as that company went under and later acquired by the company using the name currently. If you have 6.5 in the rear look at JBL, Polk, or Infinity speakers, they are great quality speakers and give you a good foundation to build upon in the future whichever direction you want to go.

Oh I know the speakers are garbage. Sorry if I sounded like I want my si sound from just swapping head units. I'm looking at these to replace the front...

                  Kenwood http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1131665...3033345&awdv=t

                  Infinity http://www.crutchfield.com/p_108R652...EF-6522ix.html

I don't have rear speakers because I have a dx but they will be added in the future.

Ended up getting the infinity speakers

                    Speakers

Out of those you listed i would choose Infinity since kenwood makes good headunits but their speakers are years behind. Plk db series speakers are great units and their regular mount(non shallow) provide great sound. I sugest you also look at JBL speakers. If you are not going to power them with an amplifier i sugest you look at low wattage so your Stereo can squeeze the best possible sound out of them. Alpine CD units are cheap and have exceptional sound, check the clearance section and you can get new discontinued Alpine units for cheap.

Meh, I guess I'm the lamest 24yr old ever. I looked at some pioneer ones that are nice but I'd rather have matte black instead of Shiney black plastic. Pretty much just the nakamichi old radios and some old alpine but people want a lot for the popular ones.

                        Here's a perfect one but it's the 7821 with no knob...7831 has a knob which I want.

                          Nakamichi

Old Nakamichi were ahead of the competition and had made a fantastic reputation which is why I myself thought about getting one, and there is nothing odd about wanting a neutral looking unit instead of something that has all kind of flashing lights. I got mine for the Bluetooth option and because I got it at a steal($57).

Since you probably know more about nakamichi than me, how much should I pay for a nakamichi mb-vi?

A brand new one in the box is going for 500$ obo on ebay, and used is around 2xx $ shipped. If it's clean and working is it worth 200$ ?

                              Nakamichi

As good as Nakamichi used to be it is technology of the 80s and 90s, there are sites like this one dedicated to Nakamichi enthusiasts and they install aux ports to accommodate new technology to those old units, personally I know what I have to do to earn $200 dollars and I would not pay that amount for an old unit regardless of how good it was when it first came out.
