    Ready for paint...Where to begin?

Not sure if this belongs in off topic, feel free to chime in.

As some of you know, I recently picked up an s14, and I'm ready for some color.
Ive never had any of my cars painted before, and I have no idea where to start.
I guess what I wanna know is, wheres a good place to get colors from? Kinda like the Lowes/Home Depot painting center, how they have those charts&stuff. Do cars follow the same concept?

Our local napa mixes paint...or look for a local auto body supply place. They have color chips just like lowes or Home Depot have for house paint

This is a thread about your car. Why would it belong in off topic?

Perhaps... but paint is paint, and we DO have an Other Automotive section
(I know this, because I spent all day yesterday making a calendar to represent that section!)

I'll move it. But for future reference, if you have to begin a thread with "I'm not sure this belongs here", it would be wise to spend a minute making sure that there's not a better place for it.

It's lazy posting like this that got the beginner forums locked to anyone with over 30 posts.

Moved to Appearance. Even though this isn't dealing with a CB, the question can be directly applied to a CB just as well. Painting a car is painting a car... unless that car happens to be made out of some oddball material.

Its a good question, that even I thought about asking.
What type of paint do we buy? Is there a good place online that members have bought from?

For napa's cost i've been impressed with their paint and clear. You also should have a few local paint stores that can sell you anything from piss paint to the best cand colors on the market, you will just have to look/call around someone supplies the body shops with materials and paint.

That would be difficult. I'd have to travel around 70 miles to get to the nearest city. My little town has one red light. There is a body shop in town, but its the only one around. Things can get pretty pricey.
I have a hole about the size of a quarter under my taillight on my Impala& the same guy quoted me $1700 to get it filled&painted. Its about 1/3 the size of a quarter actually.

Are you going to attempt to paint the car yourself, or have the shop do it? The cost of the paint is minor. The labor is where the money comes in.

If you're going to paint it yourself, try going to the body shop and asking where they order their paint. Ask if you could order some for yourself. If they're cool, they'll let you order at cost. If not, they'll make a profit. (they'd be smart to let you order at cost, in hopes that you'll return to them if you screw it up! )

Do you have any "budget" paint shops around? Even if it's 70 miles away, a trip to a Maaco or equivalent might be worth it. Especially if you're capable of doing any prep work beforehand. Do your research on the shop to ensure they do good work, and get at least the second cheapest job (I've had nothing but Maaco's second cheapest on my car, and it still looks good, years later. Not perfect, but I'm not complaining for the price!)

I'm not telling where to get work done, i'm giving suggestions on where to get paint. I am sure that shop wouldn't care to tell you where they get their supplies.
