    Transmission code question

    Hi there,

    Honda Accord DX 1990.

I felt something funny today when driving, the rpm went over 3000 while changing gears ( 2nd to 3rd) .

The S-light never went off, neither the check engine light. When I checked for check engine- transmission codes, the S-light gives code 1,2,7,8.

    Any advice?

    Cheers.

PS: I will be putting my car in storage until April. Whatever I have to do, does it matter if I wait?

Today, I replaced the trans fluid. I cleaned the solenoid and tested them. I took the car for a drive and it repeated the same issue a couple of times ( rpm went over 3000 when shifting from 2 to 3rd) . I read the codes and the S-light is not giving any.

    Any advice?

I will be putting my car in storage until next year. What would be the best course of action here?

    Cheers and thanks in advance

        A few guesses

reset the ecu - pull battery/ecu fuse

I suspect the caps in the TCU and/or ECU are starting to go and this is what results from that. I dont think the car should even be moving with the codes it has

        Transmission shift bands are worn.

Adjust the throttle/shift cable to within spec.

You might want to do the codes again, as there isn't a code 78 according to the list here:

          http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=21259

          12 is listed though.

            TCU Codes:

1-Lock-up solenoid 'A' circuit open or shorted.
2-Lock-up solenoid 'B' circuit open or shorted.
3-Throttle Position Sensor circuit open or shorted.
4-Vehicle Speed Sensor open or shorted - No signal from speedometer.
5-Shift Lever Position Switch circuit shorted.
6-Shift Lever Position Switch circuit open.
7-Shift Solenoid 'A' circuit open or shorted.
8-Shift Solenoid 'B' circuit open or shorted.
9-Counter shaft or transmission speed pulse generator open or shorted.
10-Coolant Temperature Sensor open or shorted.
11-Engine RPM (Ignition coil signal) open or shorted.
            12-(No code 12 used)
13-Main shaft speed pulse generator open or shorted.
14-Linear (line pressure control) solenoid open or shorted.
            15-Kick down switch circuit shorted.

the control transistors are probably over heated too by now and should be replaced also.

The codes were 1,2,7, and 8. Once I reset the ECU , I didn't have any codes anymore

Thank you! I had this issue back in 2007 ( leaking capacitor in the TCU). Back then, The S-light was flashing and the car only had 1st and 2nd gear. I replaced the TCU and have a spare one just in case. Once I get my car out, I will replace the TCU and check.

The funny thing here is that I happened to check the codes because I am picky about this car and thought something was not right. The S-light was not flashing and the TCU didn't give me any warning. I had to do the procedure in order to read the codes from the S-light flashing.

By the way, from 2nd gear to 3rd is when this only happens. The rpm goes to 3500 BTU the gear shifting is smooth, there is no slip or noise or pulling.

Is there any way to know the specifications about rpms and gear shifting?

Actually I was asking about the rpms not the mph.

For example, when shifting from 2 to 3 , what rpm should the car reach?

Part of the equation is how far the throttle body is open. If you have it wide open it will shift later than if your driving like a grandma.

                        Update

I replaced both computers and no transmission code so far.

-I noticed that the rpms are around 3000-3200 when changing fro 1st to 2nd.
-Any way to know it is not a problem in the transmission but somewhere else?

What is the vehicle speed when it shifts? At what throttle position? Light, halfway, on the floor?
