    rim offset?

ok this is probably a really nub question but what is off set on rims?
this is a subject i have never really looked at before

and what sort of off set do i want for deep dish rims?
it says my current ones are 40,45 offset

7" wheel with 45 offset is 177.8mm wide (25.4*7) and sticks 43.9mm (177.8/2 - 45)outward from the hub and 133.9mm (177.8/2 + 45) inward. If you want an 8" wheel with an offset of 30 it would have 71.6mm outward (25.4*8/2 - 30) and 131.6mm (25.4*8/2 + 30) inward from the hub. So it sticks out 1.09" [(71.6 - 43.9)/25.4] further and has 0.09" of clearance on the inside. You can reverse equations to figure out what kind of offset you need for specific dimensions.
