Who else is a military vet?

So I would like to get a thread together of currently serving or former servicemen, maybe share a bit about what we do or did for "Uncle Sam". I know there was another thread that was similar but it seemed to be more about asking questions for those thinking of joining. I want this thread to be for those of us who have already served some time in uniform to build some camaraderie.

So with that said I'll start out..

I joined the Army reserves as an 88M ( Truck driver essentially), served 3 years on the dot there and went active duty shortly after 9/11. I got stationed at good old Ft. Hood in the middle of Texas. I was assigned to a HET unit, stayed in the same platoon of the same unit for 9.5 years and deployed 6 times to Iraq. I stuck to my guns and stayed a card carrying member of the E-4 mafia for the entirety of my time, no Art 15's in my jacket, I just never wanted the bs that came with stripes in a trans unit.

Anywho, post up a little about yourselves.

There is a number of us that are!

    MONG 9.5 years
    FLNG 3.5 years and count

25B - This can vary as I have now had 8 different titles with this MOS
25Q - This also varies as I have had 6 titles with this MOS as well

OEF 2011/2012 - Deployed with a trans unit as comms chief

Fixing to make E6 as soon as ALC is complete.

Not a vet. My wife talked me out of joining the Air Force...even though she was Guard. She felt it would've been too time consuming if both of us were in. I am interested in seeing what people on here have done.

I'm appreciative too! You guys are undervalued in a lot of people's eyes.

        U.S. Navy here

Been in almost 9 years, picked up E-6 back in November of last year.

Current job is C-130T Flight Engineer. I sit behind the pilots and manage the plane while they fly. Though they are ultimately in charge of the plane, I am the one who tells them it's good to go and know every nook and cranny about the plane. I also smack them on the back of the head if they mess something up.

Before this I was a Flight Engineer on the P-3C Orion, loved this job as well. Pretty much did the same thing on that plane as I do now. Only difference is the mission, in P-3s we chased drug runners, performed recon, and search and rescue. Now we transport cargo and "essential" personnel to "essential" places.

I've deployed all over the world,

        OEF 2012/2013 with P-3

I'm putting my officer package in around December hoping to be a NFO on F-18, but we shall see.

I have a thread in media section that i need to update.

Far from considered a vet but I'm almost done with tech school at Sheppard AFB, TX. Went to Air Force basic mid March and can't wait to get out of here and go operational.

My job is weapons (loader) on the F-15E and I'll be stationed out in Mountain Home, ID.
I always wondered how many people were military on here. I know there were a few that no longer go here.

Anyway its been a few years trying to accomplish this goal for a few different reasons and I'm stoked to finally be a part of this. Being from a military family it really means a lot to me.

                Welcome everyone

It looks like we have a good spread of occupations and branches in here so far. How did ya'll end up choosing your particular branch?

Thank you to all of you.

After I failed out of college, I tried to go Air Force then Navy, even losing 40 pounds in 6 months to make the cut, getting a 98 on the ASVAB, etc, only for my applications to get denied because I checked the box asking if I'd ever seen a mental health specialist (with no explanation box under it, btw. I was failing out of college and my mom wanted to see why), so I never go the chance. Both of my Grandfathers were military, and I have nothing but respect for the services.

So just so everyone knows, recruiters and the military have no way of seeing your medical records unless you went to a military hospital. Those are straight from the horses mouth. Honestly if you go to another recruiter in another county or state you could probably be picked up if you were still interested. 98 on an asvab is amazing you can be a nuke or basically anything you want.

I knew someone who got a 97 and they rolled out the red carpet for him. Something about Ft Bragg and a fast track program. I don't know a lot of military terms but I think he became an officer?

Most of my family has served. I'm one of the only ones who haven't.

Cousin, served from 06-10 USMC as a Motor Transportation Mechanic. Went to Iraq.
Another cousin, USN, USS Nimitz 04-09? went to the Red Sea.
Another cousin has served in the Army like 20 years. Drove tanks and last I heard fly's attack helicopters.
Step Mom served 12 years in the 80's and early 90's, USMC. Something to do with being like a secretary for a court? Said MP's get in more trouble than anyone.
Grandfather served in Vietnam. Don't know much about it. Never asked.

Anyhow, thank you to everyone of you who have agreed to pay with your life for the freedom of your fellow man.

How long ago was that? Sometimes it depends on what the time period and if they're trying to take people or kick people out. I had to lose about 60 lbs and had checked pretty much the same box (mental health related stuff) but it was from high school and after a certain amount of time that kinda doesn't matter as much. I was going to go in out of high school and then went back about a year and a half ago and had to start the process over. Also had two surgeries to have a cyst removed. Just a lot of circumstantial stuff goes into it and whether your recruiter wants to try or not it from my experiences.

That's pretty impressive on the asvab score. I think I got a 93 on the mechanical so I went open mechanical and ended up being assigned to my job.

My thanks goes out to those serving as well and their family members. I have four retired AF parents. Father was a cop/loadmaster, mother was cop/paralegal, step father was cop/catm, and my step mom was scheduling and some of their parents served as well so I'm very proud to continue that legacy.

I wanted to be the guy on the ground like you see in the movies. Cool to think less then 3% of the people who join the military are actually grunts on the ground. I got a 93 on my ASVAB but didnt care since all I needed was a 31 lol

                            Ill join lol!

I did 4 years active in the Army and 3 years with the NY National Guard.

                            Served from 10/2003 to 05/2011.

I was a 91G, which then became a 68G, which is a Patient Admin Specialist. Medical paperwork basically. I wanted to go in as a Combat Medic, but I did not score high enough on my Asvab. I retook it and got with in like 5 or 6 points. Said fuck it, and joined.

Never deployed, and wish I had taken a cooler job, but it was the best decision I ever made hands down. Met so many awesome people, travelled for free on the govt dime, and saw many places.

                            Also the training is priceless.

I think I'm a fairly tough, competitive guy, but I knew infrantry wasn't for me. I likened it to being a pro athlete. Being a grunt, the chances of you having some life altering injury during your time are so high, and then the government's done with you...except you're getting paid chicken feed for your risk instead of millions of dollars.

So glad I was a computer guy in the Marine Corps. Very few comm units and lots of them get attached to grunts. Luckily I got stationed in San Diego for 3.5 years and had a blast. It was like being a civilian. We worked 8-4:30, with some early morning PT sessions thrown in for good measure. People say that base was lax, and with good reason. Something about that place just mellows you out, and 0500 PT runs just don't sound that appealing anymore.
