ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

Read them. You will be expected to follow them.

Help! Car wont pass smog: "Gross Polluter" sat 4 a year w/ a vacuum leake!

Hi. First post in the forums. I've owned a 95 Civic EX. AT and a 99 Civic EX AT but recently I purchased a 92 Accord with a F22A engine. The car sat at my uncle's place for about a year. After I purchased the car for next to nothing I took it to get registered and smoged. The car ran started and ran fine for a few test drives. Engine sounded like it needed a little bit of timing work done. And I could hear a faint constant high pitch sound. After taking it to get smogged I got a "Gross Polluter" . I was a bit crushed to find put a car I thought was sound, coming from my uncle, would turn out so bad.

Smog read outs: (the maximum value to pass smog/my Accords readings)

    15mph - 1679 rpm, %CO2=13.2, %O2=1.2, HC (ppm) = 81/71, %CO=.074/1.63, NO (ppm)=554/2183!

    25mph - 1791 rpm, %CO2=12.4, %O2= 0.9, HC (ppm)= 91/112, %CO=O.62/2.12!, NO (ppm)=511/1479!

I spoke to a mechanic friend of mine and was able to give him the whole story. He told me first I am dumb for not doing an oil change and fresh tank of high octane for a car that old, then he listened to the engine and pointed out a few things: I have a vacuum leak (much louder than before I took it to get tested) and the fast idle controller had some nasty looking hoses for the coolant intake and outtake, this would explain the high idle (around 2k) and the vacuum leake could explain the plorblem with the fuel evap control failure. He also tod me to get new plugs and maybe wires too.

My question is, with smog read-outs this high, will fixing the above problems along with fresh oil and gas and coolant be enough to pass smog? Could I have another problem or things to look at?

Note: there is no white or black smoke coming from the tail pipe at hot or cold temps.

it is very likely! it also helps to make sure the car is fully warmed up and idling as low as possible.

your mechanic friend sounds like he provided exactly the next steps you would need to proceed, fortunately it is cheap maintenance type stuff. all of the things he mentioned definitely play a role in adjusting the fuel mixture, burning it efficiently, and making sure it idles well - all of the things a smog check looks for! His recommendations are spot on.

you might want to also look into fuel injector cleaner, or running some sort of Seafoam combustion chamber cleaner, to dry to burn out what may be cruddy buildup on the pistons/valves.

to me, it sounds like the car is in relatively alright shape (no blown headgasket or whatever) but is old and dirty enough inside that it needs a refreshing before saying that it "runs clean"

Usually the next step beyond these things (and following them up with a tuneup - adjust base idle, distributor timing) would be to try replacing the catalytic converter. Surprised your guy didnt recommend this! Its usually the first thing they suggest as it is easy to install but a high-dollar item. If you can replace some hoses and do some tuneup work and pass, that's the ideal solution!!

      The bolded section above...

If you are going to replace the catalytic converter, you should also replace the o2 sensor.

I can almost guarantee that after doing everything your buddy said and listed above, your car WILL NOT pass smog without a new catalytic converter. If that car has been running like crap before you got it, then the catalytic converter and o2 sensor are most likely crapped on and should be replaced.

      Good luck
