    Ecu code 12, 15. Car won't start!

Hey guys. I recently bought a 91 se. It fired up right away for a few days and all seemed fine until the check engine light came on. So I got the codes and it was 12 for the egr system, I think, and 15 for ignition output. Now even with these codes the car started up and drove. A little rough idle but was drivable.

So recently I changed the spark plug and wires. And got a new battery. It ran for like a few days. Then randomly I went to start it and it turns over but just dies right away. I can smell fuel so I don't know if it's the fuel pump. Maybe the main relay? Or the dizzy? And also my egr valve is fine. So I have no clue as to why my car is not starting all the way. Can any one help? Thanks.

I think ecu code 15 points out to the igniter inside the distributor. By the way did the things i sold you last year work out good. I would get a honda unit if possible. Check ebay, usually rou.d $60 or so if your lucky.

If you can smell fuel, then you can rule out your fuel pump, main relay, and injectors (most likely.)
I forget what the ignition output signal code is regarding, but something is telling me the ignitor and/or distributor. Don't replace anything on my word, since I'm not very sure at this point (I'm halfway out the door, but I figured I'd reply anyway)... That may be something to look into.

As for the EGR... if it's throwing a code, something is wrong. If the system is fine, check the plugs. Be sure your ECU has been reset. If there's still no change, try another ECU.

Very much sounds like the code 15 is the problem. It's the ignitor like mentioned, and is inside the distributor. Worry about the egr code later as 15 is the one you need to resolve first.

Is there a diagram for changing the ignitor? I've never had to change one. Any one know how too?

Take the dizzy cap off ( 3 screws) and move it out of the way
unplug the wires ( make shure u know where that go)
take the 2 screws holding it in out then change it.

this is what it will look like

this is what you need to change

on the 92-93, its external, and right on top. too bad you have a 91 which is internal, im not sure how to replace it.

im only replying for refernece of owners of 92-93's.

I just showed how to replace it. Its the same on the 92-93. the only difference is where the coil is but that has nothing to do with changing the ignitor.

Exactly. The ignitor is internal in all models. KB7Acoord, you are confusing the ignitor with the coil. The coil is internal on 90-91, and external on 92-93. That is always a good thing to replace at the same time as the ignitor, but it is not what we are discussing here. thepowderblue's pictures show very clearly exactly what to look for, and what to do. It really can't get any clearer than that.

Could it be my spark plugs? I changed them recently to Bosch platinum brand. And I heard now that those plugs are the worst brand you can buy. So maybe I should put oem plugs in? I did start having this problem after I changed them.

And would the ignitor be good if the car starts right up but quickly dies? It doesnt make sense. If it starts the ignitor should be good right?

A bad ignitor will cause your car no to run, maybe if its dieing then you could have that issue.
You should Only run NGK or Nippondenso plugs.
If you are getting a code 15 that means replace your ignitor. It could be your wires and connectors in the distributer going to the ignitor could need to be cleaned or replaced..

It doesn't run. Starts but dies right away. Which screws hold the ignitor in? I cant seem to get it out.

There are 2 on the bottom of it. Maybe take the dizzy out.
