HVAC air mix doors not working

So I'm not exactly sure what it's called, but I've noticed that my car doesn't seem to want to work it's blending doors correctly.

For example I can hit the defrost directional button on the dash, and air will continue to come out of the main vents. It takes forever to clear the dash, even on the high heat/fan speed settings. Turning the wheels to manually close the dash vents seems to help here.

Anyway, I ran across this thread but it seems to be in the CD5 area and I was wondering if someone had this particular procedure for the CB7 they could share?

Does it sound like the doors are moving at all? There is a stepper motor/actuator on the side of the blend door assembly; there are some plastic guides that can break and limit the motion.

I haven't gotten down there and listened yet. The stepper motor has to be working to some degree at least since I can change from the main vents to (partial) defrost or the floor.

My plan is to disconnect the stepper motor from wherever it's mounted but leave it connected electrically, and hit the different dash buttons to see how it reacts. Or maybe after I take it out of its mount little pieces of plastic will come tumbling out and I'll know what's wrong

In the meantime I'd love to have a test of sorts to make damn sure my components are ok. I'm going to have to get a service manual!

I got down and observed my motor's function earlier. Wow this thing is super accessible! I love working on this thing.

Anyway, I hit all of the airflow directional buttons and the motor made an adjustment with all of them smoothly. No stutters or hiccups at all. The movement between defrost and the forward vents was very minute though. I'll have to take a video to see what you guys think.

Here you go. Let me know if you all see anything out of the ordinary.

It appears to me everything is working properly mechanically, but maybe the blend doors aren't fully shutting. I'm definitely getting air to the front when when the floor/defrost is selected.
