    Awd= subie for sure.

I'd get a legacy gt. My boss owns one that hauls ass and is pretty baller for a legacy. That 2.5 turbo motor goes.

Based on your background, you're gonna head for a Subaru, so I guess have at it. Other than that, if you want style points find an old Audi, or maybe a VW R32.

Audis and VWs are more trouble than they are worth.

Agreed. I love Audis, but I'd never want to buy a used one. A $10,000 Audi is going to be a $25,000 project!
The R32 seems to be a cut above the usual VW garbage, but that basically just makes it an Audi in a Golf wrapper. The costs to repair and maintain an R32 are probably no less than the costs of maintaining an A4.

Manual AWD cars that you could probably find for $10,000 or less... barring Audi and BMW (no better in terms of being a money pit) you're going to be limited mainly to Subaru.

The G35 came in AWD, but I'm not sure if those models came in manual.

The Chrysler 300 came in AWD (and amazingly, would be among my own considerations), but the AWD models did not come with a manual transmission option.

The CTS came in AWD, but again, I don't believe the AWD models came with manual transmissions.

There are some $10,000 Mazdaspeed 6s on cars.com right now. AWD and 6 speed manual.

The Saab 9-2x comes AWD and manual (as it should... it's a WRX... Saabaru!)

Also, one that most people seem to overlook... Volvo. The S60, S40, and the V70 all came with both AWD and manual transmissions. Volvos are probably the most reasonable and reliable European brand in the North American market these days. They take some work to really be sporty, but the potential is there.

Subaru has not impressed me with their build quality. They can be fast, and they're not terrible to work on... but there are some seriously chintzy pieces even on an STi.
I would probably lean towards the Volvo options or the Mazdaspeed6 myself.

I slightly disagree with the knock on VWs and Audis. Since I work at a Dealership that sells them, for every horror story that has a $5,000 repair bill, I see an Audi/VW that has run solid for 150k+. There's usually a story to tell behind either car; an abusive or negligent owner vs a guy who knew that they were buying a european import and took the responsibility of spending the extra cash and maintaining it right.

The real issue is finding an Audi/VW that hasn't been abused, I know you would never look for nor find a turbo AWD Beetle, but it's always best to know the history on these cars before you take ownership, and DEFINITELY have them checked out from top to bottom.

It's true that some VW products are amazing, and they have a following for a reason... but I've seen far too many with major electrical issues, and far too many on fire, to ever consider trusting one.
Any VW product that offers AWD and any measure of performance for $10,000 is probably going to be rather heavily used... and chances of finding a neglected one are higher. I'd consider a brand new one, with a warranty... but I'd never want a used VW product. Not one that I had to depend on, anyway (I DID consider a Phaeton briefly... because they're pretty freakin awesome.)

I must be strange, I don't like many newer cars... But if I was given an old VW Corrado I wouldn't complain! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they are going to bring it back though...http://www.autotribute.com/4401/new-vw-corrado/

I have always been partial to Audi's AWD vehicles though, they are on par with any Subaru I have ever driven, if not better in some cases.

I have a buddy Sean Martin that works at this small company in Chicago called AMS PERFORMANCE 8) and he has a Subaru Forester XT it's 2.5L sti motor Turbo and 6 speed. The only issue I see is Subaru is known for weak transmissions.

I also like the mazdaspeed 3 it's nearly 300hp is beastly and they move!

Look for a Celica All Trac or GT Four 8) rare and look amazinggggg.

I test drove an 04 WRX last night with high hopes only to be let down , 19 year kid beat the crap out of this thing and riced it SMDH...

Mazda 6 is a good car. My buddy Tim had six speed 6 that he let me drive a few times, definitely quick! I was kind of looking at a couple already

I'm not to big on 300's, a little bulky for my taste, but I've heard they are good vehicles.

As far as the 05 Legacy goes... I told the guy I want to drive it again, its been 2 weeks today since I first looked at it and in that time he has bent a wheel .
But he said he ordered a matching replacement...

I am getting off work early today and going to look at a 00 prelude sh. 89k miles and a five speed. It won't have my AWD obviously but I've always wanted a 5th gen LUDE

I've never really cared too much for euro cars
I drove my sister's S80 and wasn't that impressed, but maybe she bought a shitty one idk..

Subarus only have weak transmissions if you heavily abuse them. My friend has a 2006 WRX Wagon he has owned since new and it now has something like 160K on it and he's running over 22 psi on it. Original motor, original clutch, routine maintenance.

The 9-2x option isn't a bad idea. It's basically a WRX Wagon with more sound deadening, which is one of the bigger gripes I've ever had with the Subarus.

Just make sure if you get the 2.5L turbo motor to replace the oil pickup ASAP before it cracks off and takes your motor. That, and run as far and as fast as you can away from Mobil 1 5w-30 in these motors.

The Corrado is the only VW I truly like. I drool every time I see one. They still have their reliability issues, but I'd still take one. If they were RWD, I'd probably own one right now.

quattro is amazing. Audi makes a fantastic car... but they have VW's electrical issues from time to time, and when an Audi breaks, an Audi BREAKS! Lots of complex expensive bits to fix on those cars (same goes for newer BMW and Benz.)

                        Mazdaspeed3 is FWD.

The Celica came in AWD turbo form in two generations. We got the earlier one as the all-trac, and IMO it's ugly. The better looking one, sold in Japan as the GT Four, never came here. We only got the wimpy N/A FWD ones.

300s are a bit large, but the chassis comes from the E Class... so it's not your usual floppy American car. Probably not as sporty as you're looking for, though.

The S80 was more luxury-oriented. Seriously, take an S60R for a test drive if you can find one nearby.

You can get an e46 sedan or wagon in awd and a 5/6 speed

The wagons were only the 323/325 where as the sedans you could get the 328 and 330 in awd as well.
