Well... this is an interesting problem. I think we all need to get House MD on this problem and look at the symptoms and figure out what the underlying cause is. I'm surprised you are not getting a CEL on when this happens.
So you can turn on the car and put it into gear and drive it around but you can not take your foot off the throttle while you are in gear. Can you accelerate after going to a different gear. For example if you are in 3rd and you slow down can you rev the engine in neutral or pop it into 2nd and get the motor going again?
I would look at every single electrical connection... especially the ones around the distributor that report to the ECU. Spray some contact cleaner in those to displace any water and let that dry out. It wouldn't hurt spraying a good amount of this cleaner or WD-40 in the back area of your alternator to get any left over water out. Just dont run anything till the cleaner dries out completely... might take an hour or so.
My guess is this has something to do with a sensor reporting bogus info to your computer screwing up your fuel injection.
BTW...
I've known so many people that have done what you have... gone to the local car wash and put it on engine degreaser and went to town on their engine compartments only to chase these demon problems cause water got into some vacuum line or into their cv joints or some thing! I recommend if you really want to do this right that you take it to the steam cleaner guys that wrap up the important things and only clean with gentle steam and let the bad stuff just drip off... its kinda expensive $50 but they do a great job... and they don't dump the waste into the sewer... or recycle the water like some car washes!
