No need to get bent out of shape, it's gonna still be there. They made a bad investment looking for tourism. They'll declare bankruptcy, someone else will buy it for cheap and try to do something else with the area since a mall, amusement park, and hotel weren't cutting it. I think the biggest problem right now is the world economy so people aren't spending as much money anymore. With airlines charging so much for a flight it's no wonder so many places are struggling. "Yes, I'm aware we have a massive cargo hold under the plane, but we still want your $25-35 per bag. Oh you want to cancel then it will be a $300 fee."

The Ring will continue to operate, may just end up under a different name and hopefully have more venues there to support the costs.

The developers built a huge complex as part of the 'Ring's modern Formula One track facility, incorporating a large mall, car showrooms, hotel developments and an amusement park. Wildly optimistic projections said the investment would yield a tourism boom, but that never occurred.
That right there was their problem. The 'ring is a FAMOUS spot... but the majority of the people that are in love with it are guys like us. Guys that play video games and read car magazines... and don't have money to go traveling the world to patronize a racetrack (and the surrounding area.) The few non-Germans that can afford to get to the 'ring probably don't have the finances to do more than say "wow, there it is!", and then go down the street to spend their last few bucks at Der Wafflehaus.

So if it goes bankrupt and shuts down....

On a more serious note, it is the most famous race track in the world, as well as the largest. There is no possible way it will ever be shut down. There are enough rich motoring moguls out there who can afford to keep it going.

Some of us saw this coming a long time ago. There was a 'Save the Ring' campaign going around the internet and everything for fans to sign and protest against all that crap they built up. EnthusiastApparel.com (the best car shirt site evar!) even had a shirt made up for it. I'm sure it'll be back though, the place is too important to the automotive community for no one to step in and help out.

It's actually a public road as well as a race track. When it's not being used for racing, you can just drive on it.

There are also something like 10-20 deaths a year on that road. I'm sure that plays a part as well. Insurance must be crazy.
