    About my very first rebuild

Hey guys, I just want to show you about my rebuild. Its been long in the making but its my first ever time doing it. Its a brown (gonna paint it blue) 91' LX wagon Auto.

The tear down was simple enough but took a while by myself,

    Out of the car,

    Nasty dirty engine,

    Used pistons,

On closer inspection you see clogging carbon in ALL of the oil passages. This led to stuck oil rings and HUGE oil consumption.

    Worn cylinder walls,

Found two cracked/burnt exhaust valves, which was the root of all my evils. Led to next to zero compression in two cylinders. This was why I took the car apart. Also the oil consumption which was 1 qt every 500 miles! I had expected to find bad rings but it wasn't just the oil rings it was the valves,

I think they were caused by this exhaust manufold crack. There are actually more cracks on the bottom,

Whatever happened here must not have been very good,

    Parts from disassembly,

    Painted and cleaned block,

New OS 0.50 pistons with Honda rings. Made by Sealed Power. Well technically not by Sealed Power but by "Silvolite". I'll show you,

Silvolite is the company that works for Sealed Power,

Their slogan is, "Better Pistons Since 1922". Well that maybe true. These pistons have different oil passage designs which I think are better at preventing horrible carbon clogging (as you see in the pic). Check em out. For oil lubrication, they got a big opening on both sides and slots running down the piston,

    Painted valve cover,

    Putting everything back together,

So this is what i've done so far:

New water pump, timing belt(s), tensioners, polished crankshaft and balance shafts, bored out cylinders 0.50 OS. New rings and pistons. Short bloc gasket kit by Fel-Pro. New main and rod bearings + thrust washers. Resurfaced cylinder head, 4 new exhaust valves replaced. Valve job done. New timing cover. New cat-back exhaust system and headers. Ebay short ram intake. Replaced rear brake shoes. Painted the engine bay blue. Cleaned everything as good as possible.

Here is a pic of the short block with some assessories. Pistons and bores look beautiful.

The only thing i'm waiting on now is the transmission. My old one was damaged somehow. Going to get the transmission tomorrow, JDM depot sold me one for 309$ with shipping.

Car has over 333,000 miles on it. What led me to rebuild it was the idle and stalling problems and 2 dead cylinders.

The cost has probably been about 1300$ if you take into account the new catalytic converter (80$), exhaust system (127$), headers (79$), ebay intake (49$). Gasket kit was 60$. Pistons alone costed 170$, rings were 40. Timing cover was 50$, tensioners and belts were about 50$. Water pump was 20$. Machine shop work in total was about 250$. Bore job was 85, new pistons on rods was 50, cylinder head job was 100$. Transmission was 309$.

It will be worth it though, the car with be totally remodeled after i'm done with it. It it will be a new machine with a new soul.

My only question now is what kind of power will it have with the new headers, exhaust system, intake, and larger pistons? I'm thinkin probably in the range of 140 hp.

But let me know what you all think.

Only way to know this forsure is to get it dyno'd. Nice build though! Im hoping to do this soon on a spare F22. Are those pistons just larger oem replacement or cast iron or higher comp?? Sorry dont know much about internals and such.

Thanks i'm glad you like it. They're just larger pistons, that's all. The block to piston clearance is just at the spec limit of 0.05 mm. I don't know if that's a good thing or not.

Gonna get some video of it uploaded and some more pics when I actually get it running.

In higher end powered builds added piston to wall clearances will allow for greater expansion under extreme conditions. A high hp NA/Nitrous or boosted app's would benefit from it. I went loose on my P2W clearances due to the original plan being a mild NA setup with a bit of juice.

But a greater clearance would risk premature blow by correct? Say instead of the car lasting 350,000 miles it may only last 250,000.

I finally got the engine in the bay. With a little help from my bro it worked out well,

I don't know what i'm gonna do next, probably put on the cylinder head.

Premature blow by yes eventually and maybe at higher rpm's close to rev limit you will see a light puff of smoke. And holy overspray batman that's not looking to good.

Uhhh, i'm a person who has a Honda manual

I've worked on this car for a year doing pretty simple stuff. This time I decided to go all out and take the risk of doing a rebuild. I got a lot of inspiration from watching online videos from people like ETCG. Also I had a huge mechanical problem with my car and ended up having huge mechanic bills that never fixed it. So I said forget that, if the mechanics don't know how to fix my car i'm just gonna do it myself.

I don't see the vehicle as such a difficult thing to work on. I believe that you can do anything you put your mind to. Except for mathematics, I suck at math, LOL.

Don't be hatin', its just blue engine bay. I think it looks fine. Plenty of people paint their engine bays. I only painted it anyways because I accidentally stripped the brown paint off with purple power.

Now I can see oil leaks!

You didn't mask anything off looks terrible with the overspray on things. Yes plenty of people do paint their bays and if they want it to look good they take the time to take the harness/fuse box out, remove all hoses, mounts, brake booster etc and masked the rest. I'm not hating i know you could have did a better job if you spent more attention to detail on the bay. By all means if you like it so be it, it's your car.

I just put the head on. I used copper spray for the head gasket (don't know if this is recommended). I put the timing belt on too and made sure everything was in time. I used a 3/8 extension in the spark plug hole to make sure it was at tdc when I put it on. The cam gear was in time as well.

My only concern is that I may not have set it at TDC perfectly. It may be just a tiny bit off - should that concern me?

That last 78 ft lb of force torque down of the head was brutal. It went well though. Never done that in my life.

Okay, everything is almost ready. All that's left are fluids, driveshafts, alternator, pw steering pump, and a few other things.

Check it out, it looks good me thinks,

The wiring harness is pretty idiot proof. I didn't have much trouble on that. I don't think there's much or any room for error on that part. Right?

The headers have 2 layers of wrapping and silicone spray. Its just barely touching the pipe.
