No way, too big and heavy for our cars to perform at an autocross course well. If you want wheels for autox then stick with light weight 15"-16" wheels and a good set of meaty sticky tires..
Steel wheels are still heavy but a good start if you dont want to pay for wheels. They are way better than the 18's. Remember even more important than the wheels are the tires you use.
For example a cheap light weight wheel that you can usually find mitsubishi guys getting rid off. The stock Lancer OZ wheels (see below). Not the best looking wheel. But they have our bolt pattern and are nice for autox. I've bought a couple sets for about $100 each this year. There are other wheels that you can get cheaply, just do the research.

If you can find a wider wheel, usually run it. However, if it means sacrificing a taller wheel for more width, do it...you'll still go faster. Tires you'll be running play a big role in how wide of a wheel too. Wider is not always better in autocross. Sure the wider tire has more peak grip at the proper temp, but they heat up much slower. Are your wide tires going to be at the proper temp by the time the autocross is over? If not then you may want to consider a narrower tire of the same compound.
Ideally you would run the smallest diameter wheel and tire possible and change width according to temps, but factors like ride height and wheel availability come in to play at that point. There are no black and white suspension answers!!!!!!!!!!!
