What's wrong with food? Fast food sucks nuts, but serving at a decent restauant (or even a crappy one) can be good money... and it's not that hard. It can be hectic and frustrating, but not difficult. If you're looking to go back to school, you really won't find a job that pays as well with such a flexible schedule. Restaurant schedules are like putty... you can pick up shifts, and give them away... And the more experience you have, the more (and better) serving jobs will be availible. It's not a great long-term job (I know, I'm FINALLY getting out of the business after 6 years!) but the money is there. The money is fast. It's CASH. And if you're willing to work for it, you can get as much money as you need (I worked with a guy that did 36 days straight before the boss told him he was sick of seeing his face!)
Other than that, you're going to be making $10/hr or less wherever you go, most likely. That's not great pay. With a $10/hr job, you'll make $80 for an 8 hour day. Before taxes. At the restaurant I currently work at (I haven't quit yet) I can make $120 in 6 hours, 4 of which I'm actually working hard. Granted, there are bad days where I can work 10 hours and make $65... but those are quite uncommon. And that money is cash. I also get paid $2.13/hr, which covers my taxes. It's entirely possible to make over $200, or even $300 a night at the right place. I'm not sure how people tip in your area (I've heard that my area is quite good... and further South people just don't tip AT ALL! 15%-20% is expected, dammit!)
