how do dual filament bulbs work? and how to apply that to LED's?

ive been pondering a project with LEDs for the taillights but i need to figure out how to use them as lights and brake lights like the dual filament bulbs we have on stock tails

wondering if anyone has any useful information on this subject. im still doing research on this and will post any info when i can

The only thing I can add is that I think when the headlights are on the taillights are a constant and when you step on the brake it closes the loop so to speak.

As far as leds maybe if you had one set the constant and one set the brake set it would appear brighter when the brakes are applied?

You could also arrange them however you want since they are so small.

I'm gonna post another vid wit better quality.
Thanks for all the compliments .
right now I'm sanding down a brand new in honda plastic, not in the box. edm rear fog that I didn't installed yet to put some leds in, stay tuned

it is much simpler than you think.

in the bulb there are basically two separate circuits. it is essentially two seperate wires placed in one glass container...there are two separate power wires and a ground on the other side. there are two power wires goin to he bulb. compare the contacts on a single and dual bulb you'll kinda see

now LEDs are doing the same. half the LEDs work normally and there are some left off that are operated with the second power wire

with taillights and LEDs that are all on one bulb half turn on when he lights are on, the LEDs or filament that is left turned off is connected to the brake pedal

I'm just now starting on this project myself. will see what I can come up with.
I might even make new tail lense for cleaner look.
post some pic when your done. I'm still in the designing light pattern stage.
          good luck mang!!!

Since the led's are diodes you can't dim them with traditional methods like lowering the voltage. You need a PWM circuit. This will turn the led's on and off really fast and they will appear dim to the eye. Then you need a circuit that will either bypass the pwm circuit or change it so that the pulses are longer so the led's appear brighter.

The picture that JoshM posted is how you should build it.

              thanks

ive just started my electrical engineering courses in college
learned node voltage, and mesh current analysis, superposition,
thevenin norton equivalents. Op Amps, complex power and phasors

its all been just written stuff and i learn better by being hands on

for the tailights im interested in doing the leds like a halo

similiar to the angel eyes which i also plan to do for the headlights

              http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JSMQk61xQ8

this is something i really would like to learn and do
thats why i asked how it works and why

              thanks again for the info

That's how EE is. All theory until you apply it to something. I'm in my junior year now.
