    Camshaft break-in procedure

Do I need to add ZDDP to the motor oil for first startup with a new (reground) cam? I already applied moly assembly lubricant to the cam lobes. H23A1 motor, 260 cam grind, stock valvetrain. Thanks.

i wouldnt bother with ZDDP but make sure you are using a high quality oil and lube the cam with cam lube or assembly lube before first start up

It wouldn't hurt to add some for some extra piece of mind.

Some camshaft manufacturers also recommend using non-detergent oils. Just a thought.

I use the Comp Cams break-in oil additive, Part number 159 for the 12oz bottle. I us it in conjunction with Castrol HD 30. A 12oz bottle will treat 5-7L of oil.

Can I re-use my lifters with the reground cam or do I need new lifters? They don't seem to be readily available for sale.

There are no lifters in an Over Head Camshaft setup.

Camshaft lobes ride directly on one end of the rocker arms and then at the other end there are the adjusting tappets that contact the valve stems directly (with appropriate clearances set). No lifters!

I can only assume your talking about the rocker arms?

Sorry yes, I meant rocker arms.

They are about $40 each new so I seriously hope I can reuse the old ones.

You can reuse your old ones. If they have have flat spots on the faces though it wouldn't be a bad idea to send them off to Delta to have them reground. It's not too expensive, I think my H22A1 rocker arms were something like $6-9 a piece. But if you don't have the time or cash you can run them as is. Just for some reference though, jdm92_accorn grabbed an entire new set and it showed in the dyno over his old worn rocker arms, everything was smoother on the curves. You can see this in his MRT. A Delta regrind should yield the same thing as new rocker arms being it removes any flat/low spots.
