    Brake Upgrades?

    Hey Guys, my brakes are going to need to be replaced soon, and they feel weak.. They just don't bite if you know what I mean. I am frequently driving on the highway here in Kansas City, so I would like something that can take hard stops without warping in a month.

    What would you guys recommend for upgraded rotors, calipers and drum brakes?

      OEM front pads are NAO, so get organic or ceramic pads. A rotor is a rotor man, same with drums. Just get some made by a company with a decent reputation. Like Centric, Wagner, or Raybestos. Most shoes are the same semi metallic material, so take your pick. The shoes usually last forever anyway. Wagon set-ups are bigger, this better.

      For the back, expect to have blown wheel cylinders and shot hardware. Shits cheap on RockAuto all day. Plus you can google the discount codes.

        Yep...no need to get fancy and get drilled/slotted. It won't affect your braking during daily driving. Plain rotor blanks, stock calipers, solid pads.

        Maybe replace your brake lines with new, OEM ones.

          blank rotors are fine, just get a good brand. Brembo blanks, or Centric Premiums. I stay away from the generic store brand stuff, because they tend to warp very easily. Pads will make a big difference too. If you don't mind a bit more brake dust, get a performance pad. They will have a lot more bite, and work better under heavy braking.

          Also, check over your brake booster and master cylinder. Make sure there are no leaks or anything else that could show signs of wear from age. Also, check the soft brake lines....being rubber, with age they can become elastic, and really numb brake feel. They can also crack. May be worth getting a set of Stainless steel lines to replace them with.

            ^^^Another thing I want to add, which you might already know, is that brake fluid absorbs water over time.

            Brakes get hot. Brakes function by transfering stopping energy to heat. This heat will cook the water in old brake fluid, and will make your pedal feel spongy because the heat boils off the water - leaving air in the system. Be sure to bleed your brakes every two years. Brake lines usually need replacing every nine years. Check the hoses! If they're hard, or look dry rotted, please replace them. We don't want you smashing into anything and getting hurt.

              I have a suspicion that all of the brake rotors come from the same factory and are therefore the same quality but I can't prove it. I have Centric rotors on mine and they work fine. Slotted rotors will help during aggressive driving to allow gases to escape but for regular driving you won't notice. Avoid drilled rotors as they are more prone to cracking.

              If you can find some 98-99 Acura CL hubs this would be a great time to do the rotor-over-hub conversion to make future brake upgrades easier. If not, get a set of calipers w/ brackets and rotors from an Accord Wagon to gain an extra inch of disc. It's a direct bolt on.

              F22Chris is spot on about the brake fluid. Even if your brakes feel OK, wet brake fluid encourages corrosion of brake parts internally. Keeping the fluid fresh is easy and cheap. (I would recommend a bleeder bottle like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Allstar-Perfo...=brake+bleeder it makes brake bleeding super easy. Way easier than using those speed bleeders or getting someone to help you)
