Lesson Learned Too Late - Wear Eye Protection!

Gentlemen - and ladies, this will probably go unheeded like my wife's advice to me - wear eye protection when doing hazardous work! So here is my precautionary tale:

On Saturday morning upon arrival at a volunteer roof replacement project, I was hit in the left eye with a shingle (my fault, I got too close to the house and the guys already stripping the roof didn't know it). I sustained a corneal abrasion and laceration, conjunctival laceration, vitreous hemorrhage, lacerated iris, and possible retinal detachment. I underwent surgery to repair the conjunctiva and cornea and remove debris from my eye yesterday evening. Based on a follow up exam this morning, it appears they have been able to save the eye, which was yesterday’s priority. The extent of retinal detachment is still not clear (no pun intended); the blood in the eye makes it difficult to diagnose. While the optic nerve is apparently intact, vision in the eye is very blurry and like looking through a heavily frosted window with some of the biggest floaters you’ve ever seen. I will have an appointment sometime tomorrow (will know at 8:00 AM) with another retinal specialist; additional surgery to repair the retina may be performed tomorrow depending on the diagnosis. Cautiously optimistic about regaining my sight.

Oh man, best of luck to you. I'm sorry to hear it.

I hate hearing these kind of stories: you were volunteering when the worst of things happened!

Keep us posted, I hope things turn out well!

Paul, I hope for the best for you. Your hands and your eyes are something so important to keep safe yet something every single one of us takes for granted on a daily basis. Keep us posted on how the prognosis develops and we'll be thinking about you.

Out of all the senses to lose, losing eyesight would suck the most.

I learned my lesson at Autozone.
I was the only guy who ever wore the battery protection outfit. I got made fun of all the time but I didn't give a shit. I was actually doing to to waste more time, and the managers knew it. Dealing with workplace safety and all that they couldn't say anything to me.

Then one day I was working in the back, moving a pallet of batteries.
Lo and behold, one falls off and I'm not wearing the goggles. (Or any protective stuff, it was freight)
Of course, a small spurt goes right into my eye.

Got it all taken care of, but that was scary at first.

Hopefully you get to keep your eyesight.

Good luck!!! I hope all goes well.

My dad was using an angle grinder and it knocked a shard of metal up under his regular glasses and into his eyeball. Shattered his lens and now he has an artificial one. The doctors went into his eye to remove the metal shard. Scary shit. His vision is better know than it was before (artificial lens created 20/20 vision in one eye.)

Now, I ALWAYS wear safety goggles while working on cars. For anything.

Yaa, i did roofing for over a year and wearing eye protection was never even a thought! Never. No-one mentioned it, none of the guys cared about it, the boss barely made us tie off. Even when things got icy ya grab the propane blow torch, go melt the ice and snow off the roof and get to work. No safety nothing. The guys care more about having their ciggs than safety.

Working on the car now I always wear eye protection (watching eric the car guy videos got me wearing them). I also wear steel toe shoes all the time when working on the car too.

Good luck with the recovery. Sorry to hear this....

That's awful, Paul! I hope you recover quickly!
I'm glad the damage wasn't worse that it was.

                      Update:

Thank you all for your prayers and support.

The retinal specialist today couldn’t see through the blood well enough, and another ultrasound still wasn’t clear enough, to diagnose the retina. I will see a doctor again on Wednesday and Saturday to see how well (if) the blood is clearing and if they can better assess the retina. They believe that most of the vision problem is associated with the amount of blood in the eye. Assuming the worst, I am scheduled for surgery Monday (Dec. 2) to remove the blood (i.e. remove and replace the vitreous fluid), then assess and repair the retina as needed. Subsequent surgeries will involve repairing the iris to a fixed opening (the “drawstring” muscle that controls the iris was severed so the pupil is wide open) and possible replacement of the lens which will (has?) likely develop a cataract as a result of the damage to the eye. This last item may allow them to correct the extreme nearsightedness in that eye while they’re at it.

The doctor initially stated no work this week and not for 2-3 weeks after surgery. After arguing that I had primarily a desk job, he relented and said no driving (it is legal to drive with one eye) for at least a week after surgery and that I could do whatever work I could handle. Right now the trick is learning to operate with one eye – the glare, floaters, and burning with the left eye open are very distracting, but forcing the left closed makes it tiring to keep the right eye open, not to mention the loss of depth perception.

If there is enough morbid curiousity, I do have a picture.
