Yup, black on the bezel. After you mentioned just painting it, I thought what the hell, it's faster. And it turned out pretty well.

After that I turned my attention to the power steering pump, which has been leaking pretty bad for a while it seems. I used a Gates seal kit to replace all the o-rings inside:

Since my front suspension is torn down waiting on halfshafts, ball joints, brake rotors and such I'm going to take the opportunity to remove the transmission to inspect the clutch components and replace the rear main seal. Here it is about ready to come out.

Ok so I was having a hard time getting the trans to pop out, but it was down to a fastener I missed. It's now out

Oh boy was it dirty. Both the rear main seal and the distributor seals were obviously leaking for a while. Before I could even start to wipe away the grime, I started by lightly scraping with a screwdriver. That little black puddle is super thick oil grime.

After the first round of cleaning:

Clutches is fun! (HA!) I thought maybe you'd missed a bolt, sorry I didn't get around to suggesting it. Good time to replace the axle seals in the trans also. I think that's the worst pump I've ever seen.

That's ok, I had an inkling that's what it was, since the damn thing didn't hardly move at all at the mating surface to the block when I pried a little.

And yes, that pump was horrid. I'm guessing it was leaking for a while and rather than have it looked at they just kept adding fluid. It's pretty much the theme to this car - leaks. Front main, rear main, ps pump, ps rack, axles, trans, etc. Not to mention all the ps lines are weeping just a touch.

Looking good - get an old tooth brush to get into the nooks and crannies.

Yessir, that was my plan. A little diesel and a nylon brush.

No more cleaning today, but I did get the clutch and pressure plate off to inspect. Ugh.

Photography isn't my strong suit, but you can see the minor discoloration on the flywheel's surface.

The hairline cracks all along the inner diameter were more concerning.

That's odd, what is this little trail in the pressure plate?

                  Oh.

According to the service manual, the minimum for clutch thickness is 6.1mm. There's actually a service limit for the clutch rivets' depth as well, but we're way past that obviously since they were eating into the pressure plate.

I think I got away with having my flywheel resurfaced the first time I changed the clutch in Ruby; second time I think I replaced it.

I took the flywheel to get machined earlier today, and they said it wasn't bad at all. They only had to take .008" off the face to get it ready.

So that's ready. I got the main seal girdle off today as I'm going to replace the whole thing with the Honda piece that has the seal already in place. I thought it was neat that the seal is pre-lubed.

Just need to scrape off a little crud (possibly a little factory Hondabond?)

I'm curious as to if I need to add a bit behind the plate. Anyone know if this paper gasket is necessary? They were included in the Fel-Pro rear main seal kit.

So I asked the question about the paper gasket because, surprise surprise, someone did this before and they omitted it. There is supposed to be one, per the service manual. Maybe that's why it ended up leaking? I don't know.

In any case I installed the new seal housing after first doing the paper gasket, then cleaned the oil pan up and installed that with a new gasket.

After that I reinstalled the flywheel, fresh from resurfacing. Torque the bolts to 76 lb-ft, kids.

Just out of curiosity. Did you replace the flywheel nuts? The manual calls for it but I know I have done a couple clutch replacements and used the same nuts.

My 93 OEM Honda service manual only calls for Hondabond between the block and rear main seal plate.

Felpro makes gaskets for some applications where maybe folks are uncomfortable using just Hondabond. I know I did when reinstalling the oil pan gasket on my daughter's Element - it was difficult to work with getting the pan on and I thought the gasket would be a little more forgiving of inadvertent contact with other parts as I tried to install the pan. I put of thin layer of Hondabond on both sides of the gasket as well. I did not do that for the timing cover.

You know what, you're right. I triple checked and the manual makes no mention of a gasket. It just shows that picture of the area to apply sealer, which coincidentally looks just like the gasket In any case I don't think it will hurt to have the gasket in there.

No I did not. I'd seen mention of doing so on this forum, but my '91 service manual makes no mention of it, or using threadlocker as others have done.
