my car shuts off!! helap asap

Ok so i have a 91 automatic. This morning i put the key and set it to on but the lights on the dash would be off then if i try to start it, it will go on for a second then off but if i rev it up for a bit it will stay on. It drives fine no problems at all. Any ideas?

wait, so when you set it to on none of the lights in the gauge cluster came on? also, when the car's running is the check engine light on?
