"Salmon". How do YOU pronounce the word?

For me, it is, was, and always will be sah-mun. \ˈsa-mən\. No L sound. According to Merriam-Webster, that is correct.

However, my girlfriend always says sal-mon. With the L pronounced. She's from Virginia, and apparently the southern pronunciation uses the L.

I always correct her, and I feel like a jerk for doing it.

I'm curious to see if any of our southern members also pronounce the L.

        i agree, no L.

cant help but think about how learning phonetic pronunciations is good and all, but really this is one of those examples where it doesnt cover every case.

I say it as you do but only because I make myself talk as proper as possible. Pretty much everyone else I know says sal mon.

yeah, pronouncing it with the L is just wrong, like saying 'irregardless'

Didn't know VA was the South?

                    HAHA

Yea, I spent 3 years in GA and I never heard anyone say SAL MON.

                    Everyone say's Samon.

I wonder if it's only certain regions.
VA is south of the Mason-Dixon line, so they're definitely South!
My girlfriend is from a university town, though, so she didn't grow up like a country bumpkin (no accent or anything, which makes it all the weirder when I hear something regional from her!) She's also smarter than me!

Ok, so far we have sal-mon coming from central VA and North Carolina... but apparently not from Georgia.

I kind of just drag out the 'a' so it sounds like

                            'saamon'

I'm from Ga so there ya go.
