What Have You Used to Remove the Fuel Sender Lock Ring?

The wagon reads full until the very end of the tank, then dives for empty. I pulled the sender from the tank from Rose (92 EX coupe) and plugged it in electrically - the gauge follows this one appropriately.

What have you guys (or gals) used to remove the fuel sender lock ring? I was able to use just a screwdriver to remove the ring from a tank out of the car, but to remove the bad one from the wagon, I can't get a shallow angle with a screwdriver to get it to break loose and I don't want to beat on it more and possibly damage the top of the tank. The Honda tool is no longer available and "universal" tools I've seen so far don't look compatible with our lock rings.

I'll hit the hardware store tomorrow for something (maybe an oil filter socket) I can modify to engage the slots in the ring.

I used a flathead to do mine but I also used a brass punch, both with success. You could probably drop the tank a bit to gain more room.

I made one of my front shock/spring compressor tools do double duty as a fuel sender lock collar tool by cutting three notches in it that match the three tabs on the collar. Was able to easily remove the collar and replace the sending unit. Gas gauge now works correctly.
