IMO, it shouldn't be this way; religion and government should not intertwine, and therefore any argument based on religion or a religious artifact is necessarily invalid. That's not to say that religion is bad, or that the principles/values/artifacts of the religion are bad and can't overlap with such basis for government, but the rationale of "religion(s) X(, and Y, and Z) believe such and such, and some portion of the population is in some manner indoctrinated there-in, therefore we should turn to religion(s) X(, and Y, and Z) for our basis" is just non-sense.
We can (read: I am willing to) go down this rabbit hole, but at a certain point things will turn into a seemingly religious debate just given the nature of the topic and the parties (me, and necessarily someone debating the opposite who likely is religious and believes the alternative about the separation of church and state) wishing to go down the hole (have the debate). This is why we can't have nice things.
Mods: Is this crossing the line regarding involving religion? I'm genuinely curious as I'm not calling out any religion in particular, just discussing stances on the separation of church and state (religion and government in the U.S.).
Either way, I think continuing the discussion regarding government and politics in general is awesome, and something people should do a lot more of. You know what they say about an informed voting population...
