I've been troubleshooting a hunting idle on my '91 and I just removed the FITV this evening. I set about disassembling it and it was horrific. Not only was the bowl at the bottom corroded like an old dirtbike's carb, the top was filled with what I can only guess is dirt and wax.
I'm wondering where all this crap came from. It makes me think I need to flsh my coolant system 4 or 5 times immediately.
Pretty much all of the gook is scraped away here. I wasn't kidding about the dirtbike thing. If you've worked on old carb'ed bikes at all, you may have seen a carb or two eaten away like this. I don't know if Honda's grade of aluminum for things like this is pretty poor, or it speaks more to how easily aluminum oxidizes. I wouldn't be surprised if the real culprit was the PO not using distilled water in the coolant and not flushing very often.
