Finally got a droid. What can it do?

Yeah, finally broke down and replaced my old school phone with a droid. I know a lot of you here root your device and change a lot, but I really don't want to void warranty and yadda yadda within 4 hours of getting it. So, what can I do with it without rooting it? I remember the screenshots thread, where someone had a fuel gauge for the batt indicator. Is that possible without rooting?

I'm seriously new to smartphones, never even held one before. So just looking to here from the guru's here once again!

welp rooting it opens a lot of doors for mods and "cool" programs.. you could take a look at cyanogenmod's forum

Im assuming though since you have a newer phone you already have Ice Cream Sandwich..which is what most people are trying to put on their phones..just google and read. Custom ROM's are fun though they will subtract carrier bloatware and add other cool features your carrier might not allow (like wireless/usb tethering) Check out the Google Play site and play with some free App's, Google Sky Map is dope, Radar Now! .. But if you dont root youre limited as you wont be able to get superuser which a lot of the real cool App's need, like ADfree, I think they have a non-SU version but that wont kill all of the Ad's that can pop up. GO Sms is cool, along with some of the other App's that the GO development team make..just check some stuff out

Depends what you want to do with it.

You can root your phone which is Android version of jailbreaking. This gives you Super user access of your phone. Which means full control.

After rooting you can install custom roms or make your own theme or find themes to install.

Possibilities are endless. I suggest searching for Android forums to get started. They're tons of information out there.

Also you can never void your phone warrant because you can flash everything back to factory.

google sky maps, you run it hold the fone up to the sky and it shows you every star and constellation's name as your looking at up at it.

radar now is just a fast simple app for looking at NOAA's radar for where youre at (i use it a lot)

GO SMS I used to use it..just another texting app.. I have a few more that I use but #SU is needed .. I dunno man have you ever messed with linux..its the same but in the palm of your hand.. so if you have a need theres usually a program out there for it..a lot are free and most are paid for
