I'm starting to think I may have premature head gasket failure issues.
Symptions
-Smell of oil at startup and during deceleration through the vents.
Twice on startup in very cold weather, hint of fuel smell noticeable in vents.
-After burping rad and bleeding air from coolant nipple multiple times, bubbles can still be seen appearing in open rad cap. Air getting into coolant system from leaking gasket possible?
-Car has never overheated on me, fans are operating properly. Rad, thermostat, water pump are recent. Oil consumption is about 1 quart/3000 miles.
-There isn't an obvious coolant/oil mix going on. There are no external coolant leaks. There is no hint of burning coolant or oil from the tailpipe.
I brought the motor up to temp, and did a compression test. Everything checked out, +-180 on all 4 cylinders.
My question, would an internal head gasket leak be evident from a compression test? These symptoms have occurred for a while, is it possible to run a internally leaking head gasket for a long while? Is there something else to check?
