ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

    Rust

I have rust on my quarter panels both sides. Should I just repair them or get them replaced?

Repairs almost always fail. The only way to properly fix rear quarter panel rust is to replace the entire quarter panel. Panels themselves don't seem to be terribly expensive. The labor can be a bit pricey, though. Having it done by a highly competent professional is the only way to really ensure it won't come back... and even then, it has in some cases. It's also expensive to match the paint, so it's a good idea to simply get the entire car painted.

Personally, I've had a patch welded in at Maaco... twice... and the rust returned along the weld seams both times. It is VERY important to spend the money to have someone do genuine quality work.
If I were to do it again, I'd buy a good replacement panel myself, take it to a local shop with a great reputation and have them weld it in and primer it. Then I'd roll on down to Maaco and get the whole car resprayed... their $500 Presidential job is pretty damn good. I wouldn't want anything more on a car that I parked outside and drove daily!

Keep in mind that if the rust is bad enough, it may not only be on the outer panel. It can grow to rot away the inner parts as well... and that can be BAD.

Two, actually... though the first was better than the second.

Maaco shops are all independently owned, so it all depends on how they're run, and the quality of the painters they employ. I happen to have the best Maaco painter in the area at my disposal, just a short drive away. I'd take another car there for paint. Never again for anything involving welding, though! The failed rust repair was the reason for the second paint job!

My one complaint about the paint is that they never once truly matched my stock color (or even the first color they used). It was smooth and evenly done, with very little overspray (I've seen worse overspray on $4000 paintjobs...) But my car was Phantom Gray. The first job had a bit of a green tint to it, and the second had a warmer brown tint. Neither was bad, and I actually loved the first paintjob... but still... a little off color-wise!

As stated, photos of the extent of your damage would help us help you. This thread shows what is involved in replacing complete quarters including repair of the wheel housings behind the quarter skins. http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=180806

I would never get another vehicle painted by Maaco. Their warranty doesn't cover paint cracking or peeling off of "plastic panels" which means bumpers. You could do all of the prep work yourself, buy an actual Honda color and pay someone to paint it for close to what you'd pay Maaco.

I have done body work myself many times, the last car I did it on was an EF sedan that was rusted all the way through on both rear quarters. I cut all of the rust out, sprayed rust inhibitor(not the cheap walmart crap), laid fiberglass over the holes front and back, sanded, then filled with a good body filler Like "all metal."
Actually got rear ended in that same car at a complete stop by a guy doing 50mph. And it still didn't crack or fall apart
