I have that same welder from harborfreight. ITs nice if u want to practice and its your first time. BUt it dont do very clean welds. If u get the one that also can use gas is better and produce better welds. If u work on exhaust and welds that not really going to be seen. Its fine.

Stay away from the cheap welders. I had the harbor freight one and It always gave me bad welds. I always thought It was the wire when I got it. Since everyone always said that flux cored wire will leave a lot of splatter. But the way the welder is built gives you VERY inconsistent wire speed. The rollers that feed the wire on the harbor freight are made out of plastic. And in time the wire digs into the plastic and then the wire will start slipping.

I ended up buying a lincoln weld pak-140 and honestly it was such a big upgrade from what I had before. It welds 100x better with flux cored and I have it setup right now using 75% argon 25% co2 gas. So that works out pretty good for small hobby items.

I wouldn't use mig without gas.

Lincoln is the way to go.

You can use a mig without gas no problem. Flux cored mig welding wire actually has better penetration than plain wire with gas.

Lincoln, Miller, Hobart are pretty good brands to consider.

Also If you can get a 220V welder. Makes life alot easier with usage times.

you're better off to get the lincoln welder now. honestly, i had a cheap ass one from princess auto (canadian version of harbour freight) and the transformer gave out after 1year of barely using it. apparently it's common on the cheap welders. i paid like 200 for the welder and the transformer for it was gonna be 350... i paid the extra 50 for the lincoln migpack 15 (which the replacement transformer is only 150 for BTW... prob won't need one tho)

i've welded 1/4" plate no problem when i built my engine picker... nice penetration and everything. you have to do multiple passes tho to get the material hot enough, but its holding strong.

one very important thing with mig welders (gas or fluxcore) is the tip dip. It etches the brass on the tip and nozzle so that the spatter won't stick to everything. if you don't use it you'll go through tips like 90

i have been looking at the lincoln ones but they are expensive as fuck....

i just want something to have round..... something that can help me with body panels and maybe exhaust.

everyone keeps telling me to get the 220v ones.

                  what you guys think?

They make adapter plugs to make a 220 work in a 110 wall socket.
                      I say Lincoln or miller.
                      Its just me

my budget is about $150 to 200. i know that is not much for a mig welder. but considering that i would probably use it 3 times a year, i don't want to pay too much.

i just need a simple welder for body work, exhaust systems etc. little things like that.

ex: i would have loved to own a mig welder when i did my body work. i would have taken my time with it and do everything right the first time.

so what do you guys suggest?
