DIY: Internal to External Coil Dizzy Conversion

    Maintaining External CoiL Instructions
This DIY is for those that have external coil vehicles that wish to maintain this configuration, despite internal coil dizzys. There's no need to fork out the cash for an external dizzy, just follow these easy steps.

First off I want to say that I apologize for not having pics in this DIY but in reality it is extremely simple and I don't know why people have a hard time doing this. There's another DIY out there but it uses an MSD system whereas this one only uses oem parts. 90-91 accords come with internal coil ignition systems and so do JDM h22's. 92-93 accords have external coil and so do usdm h22's. Lets get crackin.

    What you need:
    :Razor Blade or Wire Strippers
    :Soldering Iron and some solder
    :Shrink Tube/Electrical Tape
    :External Dizzy Cap
    :Needle Nose Pliers
    :Safety Pin
izzy connector pin with about 6" of wire.
MINI DIY.:How to extract Dizzy Pins from Connectors
-Go to junkyard and ask for a MALE connector similar to the ones used in a Dizzy.
-Remove the white plastic on the inside of connector by simply yanking it out with needle nose pliers.
-With a safety pin inserted in the pin location you want to take out, get it stuck and remove the pin from the opposite side. Make sure you cut wire with enough length!!

    I.Removal
    -Disconnect negative battery terminal
-Remove spark plug wires and REMEMBER the order
    -Remove dizzy cap
-Remove rotor in dizzy, on h22 applications, you will have to turn the crank until the holding screw is visible in order to remove the rotor.
    -Remove the dust cap
-Remove the + and - terminals from the coil.
-Remove the internal coil by removing two screws on the bottom.

    II.What to change
-Tape the terminal that went to the + end of the coil. There should be 2 black with yellow stripe wires that are connected to one end that went to the coil. Just cover this positive end with tape.
-As for the negative wire, remove the end that went to the - coil terminal and extend it by SOLDERING new wire that was extracted from a connector. The new wire should be long enough to reach out of the dizzy and into the bigger dizzy connector.
-Make a little notch near the edge of the cap in order for the new wire to come out.
-The pin should connect to the empty spot on the internal coil dizzy connector(corner pin). In order to remove the rubber grommet occupying the connector pin spot, you just follow the same instructions for pin removal.

    III. Reassembly
-Replace dust cover and make sure wires are tucked away safely under and out of the way of the rotor's path.
    -Replace rotor
-Replace cap with new external one
-Run the new wire through the notch in the cap made in previous step.
-Reconnect plug wires in proper order
    -Connect battery cable

Believe it or not, you're done. Congratulations, that was easy now wasn't it.

    You're doing way too much.

    There are easier options.

Keep the internal distributor. Plug everything up like normal.

Now, on the plug that goes to the stock external coil, disconnect the coil. You don't need it anymore.

On that plug, there are 3 wires. Put a fuse between the yellow/black and solid yellow wires.

OR, you splice those two wires together.

The steps you explained are to convert to an internal system on the harness. This is a conversion from a internal to external dizzy while maintaining an external harness. I'm aware of how to maintain internal dizzy but I prefer this method. It looks rather long but its quite simple and I wanted to actually write a full DIY with different aspects. Furthermore, I'm a detail freak and I like my stuff looking clean.

can't you just put a fuse between them?
          wat?

            ok.

Another way to do, which requires no cutting or splicing of anything, and keeping the internal dizzy, but its converted to external.

First thing that should be done is to make a reference mark on the cam side of the dizzy. Be sure to put everything back the way it came off.
Take off the o-ring with some pliers, and take off the rotor and washers. Set them aside where you won't lose them.

Take off the dizzy cap, rotor and dust cover. start taking off all the screws you see on the top part. Make sure you don't lose anything. Once you get the top half loose, move the plate to the side and remove the other screws(should be 4 of them) on the lower part of the distributor.

Now, pull out the distributor guts.

Do the same thing to your stock f22 external distributor.

Install the guts of the f22 dizzy with all the correct screws into the h22 housing, with the h22 shaft/plate.

Install and align the washers/rotor and put on the o-ring.

Reinstall the h22 cap/rotor. and now you have a usdm h22 distributor.

            Sorry for whoring your thread.

Ok, I have an extra EXTERNAL dizzy and the coil.
if I swap the INTERNAL dizzy for the EXTERNAL,
All I would have to do is wire the (-) wire from EXTERNAL dizzy
              to the the connector?

              Please correct me....
