    Oil leaking onto exhaust

Good day to everyone. I've got some oil leaking from the back side of the engine (side against the firewall) onto the exhaust pipe around the O2 sensor. Is that the oil pressure switch OR oil pressure sending unit? I need to know which part it is AND how to go about replacing it.

    Thanks,
    Cris P.

Have you had your oil change recently? I have heard stories where people left the O-ring on from the previous oil filter and that caused some major drama momma.

No I haven't. It doesn't appear to be coming from the oil filter area. When I changed my timing belt, balance belt, and water pump this past Sat. I tried to look around, but didn't see anything from the oil filter.

yes check the oil press. switch...RIGHT above the oil filter

it will leak around the filter, and drip right on the flex pipe...what mine did...though it stopped

Oil Pressure switch it is then. Now, any tips on replacing that bad boy? Is it fairly easy to access or get too? Should I use teflon tape on the threads to keep it sealed up good? Any special sockets needed?

Would a replacement from autozone work just as good?

I don't think mine is leaking directly onto the flexpipe, but it's right around the o2 sensor area.

It may not be the filter, but it might be the O ring on the engine side of the fitting to which the filter directly attaches. This 'fitting' is a round shaped machined casting that is located between the filter itself and the engine block. The filter attaches to the fitting on its rear end, and there is a large O ring between fitting and the engine. This O ring tends to leak when it gets old, dripping oil from the bottom of the filter fitting onto the exhaust.

The filter fitting also functions as a coolant to oil heat exchanger, acting to increase up the rate at which the oil comes up to temperature (heated by coolant, which heats faster than the oil) and to help keep the oil cool(er) once it has come to temp. If you look carefully at the filter attachment fitting you'll see a couple of coolant hoses.

i was gettin that same leak from the same location leaking on my exhaust where the o2 sensor is and it was my oil pressure switch, couple mechanics mistakes it for being the o ring on the oil filter but it wasnt..but defenetely check both

just take your oil filter off, and you can use a flare nut wrench on it if you want but i'm pretty sure i just used a plain ol wrench to take it off. used some teflon on the new one and haven't had any problem since.

I assume you mean the pressure sender switch thread?

What you suggest should work if the leak is actually coming from the thread (in which case just tightening it a bit might fix the problem...?), but it may be leaking through the guts of the switch, in which case the sender switch will need replacing.

Sounds like my oil pressure sending unit needs tightening or replacing. Autozone has one for about $9.00 so might as well replace it and add some teflon tape on it.

Anyone know the torque spec to torque it down too?

                    Thanks,
                    Cris P.

13 lb-ft. for the oil pressure sending unit according to my manual. It also suggests the use of liquid thread sealant but I'm sure teflon tape would work, it worked for my Fram Sure Drain oil drain plug in a stripped out oil pan orifice for years before recently replacing it with liquid sealant.

FYI the manual says the thread on the sending unit is 1/8 inch BSP (British Standard Pipe Taper), 28 threads per inch. You won't really need to know this but since I can't recall seeing this info posted on the forum I am posting it for general informational purposes. In case someone wants to make their own oil pressure gauge tap/ setup this info is necessary.
