Hello cb7tuner! I recently finished my h22 swap with the h23 manual tensioner conversion. After finishing the timing belt and balancer belt change, the motor had a decently loud whining sound to it coming from the balancer belt area. I remember when I put the balancer belt on that I foolishly didn't research how tight the belt was actually supposed to be, and I put a little more tension on it manually before completing the belt change which resulted in this "supercharger" sound.
Well here are some pics on how to hopefully rid yourself of this whine if you did the balancer belt change wrong like I did. Next time Ill be sure to thoroughly read the manual before assuming the belt was not tight enough.
Remove your valve cover:
Next, youll need to set the motor to TDC. I simply rotate the flywheel through the timing hole in the transmission:
Make sure you have the cams in the TDC position:
I then loosened the tension bolt that is exposed on the timing belt covers 2/3 turn:
After youve loosened the bolt, retighten it.
Now you need to move the cams three teeth counter-clockwise which will put slight tension on the timing belt:
Next, loosen the tensioner bolt again 2/3 turn, and retighten.
That should allow the balancer belt pulley to back off some, and let the balancer belt spring tensioner to do its job instead of the manual tension I placed on it that was unnecessary.
Reassemble and crank it up! This got rid of my whining balancer belt issue, and now the motor is nice and quiet.
