Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

1992 Coupe, wont start but battery isnt dead

Hey guys, having an issue with my 1992 CB7 Coupe (F22A1 if that matters)

Been driving it fine since I bought it a month ago, changed the alternator belt about a week ago and noticed the bottom bracket/adjusting screw is missing so the alternator and belt are only held on my the top main 14mm bolt. It still squeaks more often than not, but the car always drove fine.

Go to start it this morning to go to school, nothing. Dash lights come on, and I turn the key and I hear a loud click and everything shuts off. Go to turn the key on again and nothing comes on except I can hear the main relay clicking SOMETIMES.

Figuring it was just a dead battery (wouldnt see why, didnt leave lights on and theres nothing to draw power. Car has no radio, nothing) so I charged it. Checked the volts with a DMM and it was around 13.3v, so I go to start it and same issue. I check the battery again and it's stayed at a healthy 12.8 the whole day.

Im just lost on what the issue is? Under-hood Fuse Box is getting power and has no blown fuses, ground is good and I cleaned the terminals and terminal posts.

Thanks for any help. This is leaving me without a car

It sounds like your starter has failed, aside from taking it out and having a auto parts store test it I'm not sure how to check it.
of course it could also be the main rely, also i do not know how test it without swapping it out for a good known one or putting current to it after removing it.

      Clutch interlock switch?

Use a screwdriver to jump the starter to see if it turns. With the car not in gear of course.

There are plenty of stuff that can be wrong. But for starters I have some questions. When you turn the key you say the lights dim as to sending signal right. And if nothing happens on second try do you still g et power to your dash lights.

Something to check out. Would be grounds and make sure the alternator charge wire isn't grounding or loose.

When you turn the key you hear a loud "click" but nothing happens. I agree its the starter. Most likely the brushes have failed and don't make contact correctly to transfer the power to starter motor shaft. If that makes sense. The solenoid engaged, but the starter motor didn't turn.
I'd pull starter and have it checked.

(edit)You potentially could have a weak or dieing battery. After initial attempt to start the car the battery might be drained enough to not kick starter solenoid again. But left alone for a while it will reproduce a "ghost charge." What does the battery dip to under load during cranking?

Remove the battery and take it to a parts store where can perform load test on it.

Your battery may show good OCV on DMM but may not be producing enough current for cranking.

I've experienced that situation a number of times, and every time it was due to the battery cables being loose and/or covered in corrosion. The *click* and everything shutting down was almost ALWAYS due to loose cables. Ensure your cables and terminals are clean, and that the cables are clamped down tight. Some dielectric grease wouldn't hurt, either. Checking your grounds would also be wise.

A failed starter (something else I've experienced a few times) would usually just not move, or if the solenoid failed, it simply wouldn't engage the gear to turn the engine over. It's unlikely to be the starter (though not impossible.)

Agree with above. A battery can have a dead cell and still show perfect voltage, but it will not provide the amperage needed to start start the car, or even begin to start the car. If you have a spare battery, try swapping it, or at very least hook jumpers up from another car. If your car starts, we can assume your battery is junk.
                  Good luck

My grandmothers 91 coupe was experiencing the same issue with the *click. We had the starter replaced and it fixed it. I don't rule out anything when trying to diagnose a starting issue in an old Honda. It seems like every single cb7 I've ever known to have starting issues presents the same symptoms, but it's almost always something different causing it.

Check grounds, and don't trust green, frayed wires. (especially in salt belt states)
Swap the battery and see if anything changes.
Check starter last, as it is the more expensive and time consuming of all the options.

If your battery didn't show signs of dying while last driving it, we can almost completely rule out the alternator.

Just my opinion based off my experiences.
