ENG: How to test Low Fuel Light bulb

Okay, like many of you on here, I didn't know if my recently purchased CB7's low fuel light worked or not, so I tried driving it to as low as I could tolerate and the light didn't come on. Now what? Well read on.

If you are unsure whether or not your bulb works, you can do this:

This is going off instructions from the HONDA factory manual that I have:

    1. Locate the Fuel Sending Unit in the back of the car. Its right beneath the rear seat, fold down the back seat and lift up the carpeting and you'll see it towards the right side of the car.

    2. Remove the three phillips heads screws to uncover the access cover.

    3. Unplug the 3 Pin connector from the Sending unit after removing the rubber connector cover.

    4. Now, take a jumper wire, any small gauge wire will do and jump terminals A (Green/Red) and C (Black) of the connector you unplugged.

    5. Stick your key in the ignition and see if the low fuel light comes on. If it does, then your bulb isn't burnt out. Don't be alarmed that the fuel gauge will go down, since you did unplug the connector.

The low fuel light only comes on when there is less than 2.2 gallons left in the tank. Our tanks hold 17.1 gallons, so you would have to of used over 14.9 gallons before it should come on according to the factory manual.

Hope that helps you guys determine if your light bulb works or not.

Oh, and the manual said if the bulb doesn't come on, and you have in fact driven more than 14.9 gallons, then its most likely a faulty Sending Unit causing the low fuel warning to not come on.

            I don't think it is

If i bought a car brand new and it did that i sure wouldn't be happy

The low fuel light does not use the float

It has its own little piece separate from the float

heres a DIY so you can see what it looks like

My low fuel light also fades first it turns on then it fades away. I drive a little bit Then it does it again. Then finally when its past the E it stays lit. Maybe when it fades in and out it means "Dude get gas" Then when it stays lit it means "You're screwed"

Mine does the same thing. But I think because the fuel messes with the float everytime you accel and deccel.

well you also gotta remember that the fuel sloshes around in there when you're driving so its hard for the float to get an accurate reading when this is happening. So, until the fuel level is low enough for the sensor to trigger the low fuel light, it'll probably fade in/out

ahhh well I found out that I think my sending unit part is bad. Even though the light works, i drove until I had filled in 14.9 gallons and still no light.

So it must be the arm inside the tank, attached to the sending unit that is malfunctioning.

                            No

the low fuel light does not use the arm. That would be pointless because then you would have two things side by side displaying the same information.

The low fuel light uses an extra sensor like i said in post 6

is the sensor replaceable? Or serviceable?
