    ENG: Coolant Overflow Tank

So this is a super simple DIY on making a coolant overflow tank.
I'm sure a ton of other people have done it, but I didn't see a DIY and have nothing better to do.

I just installed an intake and noticed the OEM coolant overflow tank is huge and ugly, so I made a new, much smaller and better looking one.

I started with one of these beer can/ bottle things.
I know a lot of beer companies make these, maybe even some pop brands.

And the cap from my OEM tank.

On the bottom of the OEM cap there is a locking pin.

Pull that pin and the nipple will slide right out of the cap.

Next take the cap from the bottle.

Drill a hole in the center, or do what i did and take a sharp kitchen knife and make a + shape and just round out the hole with a screw driver.
Be sure not to make the hole too big as you want a snug fit.

Then put the nipple through the cap and put the pin on the underside.

This is what it should look like.

Then screw the cap back on and you're done.

To mount it you can use zip ties, or what I'm going to do and buy a bicycle cup holder and bolt it into the bay.

Optional: To have a nice brushed aluminum finish just take high grit sandpaper and the brand finish will come right off.

Total price is probably under $10.
Don't remember how much the beer can cost and the bicycle cup holder, if I remember correctly, is around $5 from Walmart.

Hope this helped some people out and definitely cleans up the engine bay.

I've been thinking of doing this for a while. Just might go out and do it soon. Good write-up.

Same here. Had the idea just no time to put it into action. Now that I see it done and how easy It is, I might do it.

I've noticed this is a lot more common on older muscle cars, I'm surprised I haven't seen it done on more imports.

                    Definitely.

                    DO NOT USE ANYTHING PLASTIC.

Yes, the OEM overflow tank is plastic but its one that can withstand HIGH temperatures.

                    Soda bottles cannot.

Im not even sure aluminum can(as the one above) can withstand really high temps for prolong periods...

and also isn't that not enough holding capacity?

Seems like it would only hold about half of the OEM tank.....

I've used thicker plastic bottles with success (vitamin water/Gatorade) even used a nos energy drink bottle once, had someone ask me if I was really spraying nitrous on my pickup truck, priceless.

I wish I could trade my heart for an extra liver, just so I can drink more and care less.

That being said, don't use a glass bottle either. The temperature change will make it crack and explode. Then you'll have to clean glass shards out of your engine bay - fun times!
