    Ignition off, while in motion.

This might be a repost, but i havent seen or heard anything about this, so....

Its kind of a 2-part question:

    1. While in Drive, what would happen if you were to turn the ignition off? On a CB or any car for that matter.

-1b. For MT, i dont think anything would happen, but i may be wrong.

    2. If driving an AT, say, down a hill, and you were to put the car into Neutral, then turn off the ignition, would the engine simply turn off and the car would continue coasting or would something horrible happen?

Ive seen MB's do a show about putting both, ATs and MT into Park, while driving and nothing happened. The car continued moving. They didnt lock up or flip or blow up or anything.

Putting the car in neutral, forward or reverse is like neutral when the engine is off.

If you put the cb in park while driving (Ive done it by accident) its like being in neutral but you can hear the parking pin going click-click-click-click-click-click until you stop
    wat?

Putting it into neutral and turning it off with an AT does absolutely nothing. You just keep rolling. Same with drive, however, you can't turn the car back on with it still in drive, you have to put it in neutral first.

I've done it with my 5 speed... Of course, I was dumb and turned the key all the way to off... so my steering wheel locked. And then the brakes wouldn't work as well because they didn't have the vacuum assistance of the engine. Yeah. That was an OMG moment for sure.

I don't know about AT though. I would think that if the car were in gear and you shut the engine off, it would stop the car? Dunno. I woulnd't want to try it!

There ya go... questions answered as I was posting

Oh, I've restarted while rolling too... that's always interesting.

Yeah! Id shit bricks if that happened.

Ive never done either nor do i plan on doing it. I was just curious. I figured if i put it in Neutral and turned it all the way, the wheel would lock up and id have to start it back up before i crashed, lol.

Putting it in Park, i figured nothing would happen, just the parking pin and a few noises you dont wanna hear.

            Thanks

I just did it rolling into my mom's driveway after work one night, years ago. It wasn't really for any reason other than "I want to get out of the car and into bed as soon as possible!"

If you switch to "accessory" then steering wont lock up. I've been thinking about doing this to save gas :P
Shutting it off while in drive = neutral plus engine resistance.
shutting off in neutral = neutral

                  questions:
if shut off while in drive will oxygen sensor read oxygen levels and administer fuel to a non-running car?

if car is running, you're cruising in neutral and then back into drive (automatic) will that hurt the tranny?

if the car was on a tread mill, would it take off?

Well i live at the bottom of a large hill. Id say its probably a little more than mile from the top of the hill to my house.

If im going about 60, i can put it in neutral and make into the driveway, which has an upward slant. Plus i can make the 2 turns on my street.

I kinda wanna know, cuz yeah, if i can put it in Neutral, and turn the car off, or to "acc" and just coast home, then put it in park, then i might give it a try.

Nothing bad will happen.. It would be like going down the highway and the car just shutting off. You can just coast to the shoulder of the road without trouble.

Shutting off in neutral and coasting shouldn't be a problem. BUT you wont have power steering and power brakes. I'd say try it in a parking lot first so you can feel what it's like.

After coasting, you should just be able to start in neutral and shift into drive. I dont know if shifting into drive while moving will hurt transmission though.

If you were to shut a MT off in gear, the motor would still turn over until the compression slowed it enough to stop the car.

But yeah, I coast in neutral down hills all the time. There is one on my way home that is in a 35 mph zone, right where it changes from 45. If I reach the top of the hill at 50 mph I can coast for about a mile before dropping below 35 mph, if there is no traffic. Actually, it is 2 hills. Kinda like a roller coaster.
I have turned the car off during this, but found no benefit.

That won't happen. Can you imagine the liability problems Honda would have if every time the engine shutdown (say your ignitor goes out) or stalled, the car suddenly locked the wheels and slid?
