Ugh.
I hate the fact that everyone thinks you need a mac to create shit.
No, you dont need to get sucked into those things if you want to be creative.
I make my movies just fine on my windows PC using Sony Vegas.
Do yourself a favor and get a machine with expandability. At least if you dont like windows movie maker (which you probably wont) or Sony Vegas, you has a plethora of video editing software, not just two on an apple.

There's a couple of programs that mac has that pc can not get. I have a mac and a pc.. I have the HP desktop that I just got like a month ago from my mom and she bought my macbook pro when I started college 3 years ago. Now that I'm out I got a PC but I don't use it often because I personally like mac better. They have a program you can create your own music with, you have a program to take photos and videos from your computer (if you have the camera built into it) and then there's two programs where you can create slideshows and movie/dvds as well. I have leapord but my computer came with tiger. I would suggest mac because you can have alot of programs open at once and not have to worry about it slowing down your performance or freezing or crashing in the middle of doing something. I usually run like 5 programs at once while online, not including the video edition.

You can get an equally capable Windows PC for much less money.
I recently spec'd out a Windows 64 PC workstation for $5500; an equivalent Mac would have cost me close to $12000!
I hear good things about Dell

go to any full-fledged....top of the line editing firm, and they'll all be using PC's.
why?
Parts are not proprietary. If you need to upgrade memory.....there are dozens of companies that sell memory.
So on and so forth....
Macs are cute and have pretty aesthetic, not to mention that it's probably the trendiest thing on the market.
Acer sells VERY robust laptops at a fraction of the cost of a similar performing Mac. (Word to the wise: Acer actually produces Macs.....sorry guys, you just bought the worlds most expensive OS)14 Ford Focus ST - stock(ish) - E30 Tune + Green Filter =

macs are not proprietary anymore and havent been for years. and good luck with your acer unless you spend a couple grand on one, their laptops under 1000 are crap, i sell them all the time just to have them come back because something isnt working, keyboard broke, monitor just stopped working, blahblahblahDon't ask me, Im just here for the pizza

x2 I work in post production and a majority of the editing houses have moved to Final Cut Pro running on Macs and are slowly moving away from editing on the Avid. I would say get the Mac and learn FCP. It might come in handy some day if you want to get a job at an editorial studio. True you don't need a Mac to edit, but the truth is that it's the industry standard.... and that's not because it comes in a pretty box.Originally posted by owequitit View PostMy sister uses a macbook pro and final cut pro. She loves it, and it is somewhat of an industry standard.
Probably though, you would want a Pro simply for the extra HP, to bring rendering times down into the realm of realistic.

I think a lot of it has to do with stability more than anything. God knows that most PC's were using Windows, which through the 98/ME/2000 iterations weren't stable. I personally haven't had any issues with XP Pro, but I think a lot of people got turned off during that era. Prior to that, PC's had all but made Macs completely obsolete in the field.Originally posted by lummieCB7 View Postx2 I work in post production and a majority of the editing houses have moved to Final Cut Pro running on Macs and are slowly moving away from editing on the Avid. I also suspect that a lot of high end studios are still using SGI as well, although that was usually more for CGI intense stuff.

SGI's are being used less and less nowadays. Most CG stuff is done on PC's running either Windows XP 64 or on Linux. We use a Linux (CentOS) based work flow at my work for all our 3D. SGIs are mainly used to run Flame or Inferno software for compositing work but that's slowly moving over to Linux based PCs since computing power for desktop stations are very fast now.Originally posted by owequitit View PostI think a lot of it has to do with stability more than anything. having an OS built on UNIX means absolutely nothing.Originally posted by Accord R33 View PostYou aren't nerdy until you ONLY use linux.
