    NEw drag-race crackdown

Groupies face 15 days in jail

Spectators who egg on drag racers could land in jail for up to 15 days under a bill expected to be approved today by the city council.

The bill, which has the backing of Mayor Bloomberg, alsoincreases the penalties for dragracin within the city limits to as much as one year in jail and $1,000 fine.

Police officials said yesterday that measure will become ''a significant tool'' in helpin them intensify their crackdown on dragracing and preventing potentially deadly accidents.

The measure will become city law as soon as the mayor signs it . Measures like this usually take about a month after being passed by the council.

The bill was passed unanimously yesterday by the public safety committee.

Its aimed at both ''the fast and the curious'', said the councilman Peter Vallone Jr.(d-Astoria),paraphrasing the titles of the action film '' The Fast and the Furious'' that dealt with Los Angeles road racers.

The city law will supplement state laws that prosecutors have used to try to stem dragracing. Sponsors believe that measure will make it easier for undercover cops to gather evidence that can send offenders to jail.

Under the city measure, dragracing would be a misdemeanor or crime punishable by a maximim of six months in jail and a fine of $600 for the first offense.

A second Violation within 10yearsof the first years of the first would be punishable by up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Under the bill, would -be dragracers could recieve the same penalties if merely caught in acts of demonstating that a race is'' imminent.

That includes having equipment in vehicles for injecting speed-boostin nitrous oxide; making an explicit invitation to race;wagering on the race's outcome;raising a vehicle vertically, and /or spinning a vehicle rapidly in a circle.

Ostensibly, that a section would allow an undercover cop to move in before a race got started.

A section of the bill is also aimed at spectators who ''participate''in drag racing by acts ''that reasonably appear to supposet such a race,'' such as wagering on the outcome or actively encouragaging the participants to race.''

Besides the 15-day jail penalty the bill also provides for fines up to $250.

This was in the daily news on september 28,2004 just yesterday.

Just a few more reasons to keep it at the track. This is also why I don't street race. I know most races take place in areas that are remote with little traffic at the time of the races. The guys that ruin it for most racers are the ones at traffic lights on busy roads that wanna go at that moment.

I think along with these laws they should have sanctioned events that have police and paramedics at the place. betting allowed. it'd be nice but it won't happen. I'd say build more drag strips and keep 'em open LATE!

yup, it's a lose lose situation. But come on, be smarter than street racing. Especially in city limits, or where there is traffic.

No but you see alot of people dont even race out in the open alot of people do it out of the way in areas where there is no traffic for miles yet the cops just follow them to see where the action is at on some dukes of hazard type shit. They just have nothing to do

..no matter what, drag racing, street racing, its illegal no matter how you see it . don't see how you can justify that there's nothing wrong with it

Damn it sucks to live in nyc, but hey it still beats san diego lol. Plus there is always ocean parkway, no pedestrian for miles, and a car only goes by once every 5-6 minutes. Instead of racing on city streets and roads, i bring them there, old school style.

Illegal street racing is a risk, you take the chance. You might get caught, you might not. It's pretty straightforward and simple. Honestly, I see this law as applicable, people have died from moronic "street racers" all over this country. I'd be a liar if I didnt say I have street raced before, but I always pick a deserted area where people are non-existant for @ least a couple hundred yards (i.e. industrial complex). I do agree with you though sparkle, don't these assholes have anything better to do? It's very true, but who knows how forceibly they will enforce it. It's like that law in NY state about Left lane being a passing lane, yah like cops EVER enforce it, cell phone laws are existant, but cops are also becomin more lenient about it in LI. I don't know if this is the best way to spend our tax money, but I see it as all the more reason for the "people" to petition for more tracks. It is beyond retarted for bloomberg to assume that by making it stronger, people will stop, they simply won't. Street racing is an addiction, the adrenaline pumping through your veins, it simply can not be just "stopped". By building more tracks, it would provide a safe outlet for us to live out our "driving fantasys" or what have you. As of now, the tracks around metro area suck huge donkey balls, and who knows if that will ever improve.

wait till you have some friends perish in a street race like i have and you'll change your tune. most everyone has sense not to do it. my friend has a 10 sec TT Supra and he only races at the track. imagine a car that fast and powerful slaming into a minivan with kids who didn't yield. everyone dies. never thought i'd say it, but when it hits close to home, you change your outlook.

best thing, dont spectate, dont do it...i use to be a chronic go'er and watch..but it got too risky and a lot of shit happend, now i go to meets and take it to the track...even though i have to drive like an hour away, or spend money at certain events, its a lot funner and cleaner, just it can get costly...beets taking the chance of watching and being in jail or paying like a 50$ spectating ticket...

damn, if they catch me, id just say i was taking a walk in the park...at 3am....

but the spectator thing is bs, ive stopped racing becuz right now would be a bad time to blow an engine or a clutch.
i still wouldnt mind spectating though.

I don't even go watch the cars around here race anymore. They are either stock or riced out AND THEY ARE ALL SLOW. So I just quit going. I spose it was for the best.
